In this workshop, instructor Pietro Accardi will instruct students in the art of this rare binding technique. Uncial is a unique calligraphic hand that is direct, user-friendly, open, and legible. These sturdy, round majuscules were used for lettering books from the 3rd to the 9th centuries in Europe. Under the guidance of the instructor, students will learn to write these beautiful letters with an edged pen dipped into ink. Once students have learned the 26 letters, several holiday projects will be made using these lovely forms. Please bring a lunch or you can eat lunch in the museum cafe.

Handmade boxes are not only lovely, they are also quite useful and can be used to store a range of objects, not just books. Using hard board or masonite and marbled fabric, the instructor will walk students through the basics of creating decorative boxes. Expanding on these primary box building skills, students will learn about more complex functions by adding a hatch-top and bottom drawer. This particular structure also features rounded corners giving a pleasing twist to the standard pointed corner. Everyone will leave with a multi-purpose box that is ready to use with its rounded corners, top compartment under the hatch lid, and fabric covering.

This popular marbling workshop will introduce students marbling techniques on fabric that can be used for covering books and boxes. Students will begin the day by working on basic marbling skills. With the instructor’s guidance, they will work on new patterns with an eye for nuance. The main focus will be on marbling fabric to create book cloth, and techniques for other textile uses will also be discussed. At the end of the day, the instructor will demonstrate how to prepare pieces of marbled cloth for use in bookbinding. Students will leave with their own stack of 15 marbled fabric pieces. All materials provided with registration.

Make your writing small, smaller, smallest as we work with various tools conducive to tiny writing. Three styles of lettering will be learned in this five week class: Monoline Italic, Clothesline Caps, and Willow by Hand, all of which can all be written in a variety of sizes. These delightful letters will be used to create books, boxes, and greeting cards utilizing a variety of materials.

Supply List:

• Notebook (if you wish to take notes in class)
• Micron pens (such as Sakura Pigma, Zig, Staedtler, etc.—whatever are you favorites in black 005, 0l, and 08 sizes; I usually use the Pigmas)
• Extra fine point metallic pens (silver and gold are nice, such as Sakura Pen-Touch .7mm) __Ruler (metal cork-backed, 6 or 12”
• Bone folder (tool used to fold paper)
• Xacto knife and #11 blades
• Cutting surface (scrap of matboard or self-healing mat, about 9×12”ish in size)
• Pencil with eraser
• Scissors
• Gluestick (such as UHU brand, my favorite)
• Rubber cement pick-up (such as Best-Test, to pick up glue stick remnants)
• Scrap paper (such as 8 1/2 x 11” used xerox or computer paper, for gluing backup, about 15 or 20 sheets)
• Water dish (such as an empty well-washed yogurt cup or similar)
• Watercolor pencils (I’ll bring plenty to share if you don’t have your own, but if you have favorites, bring them)
• Small, flat brush (I’ll also bring these to share if you don’t have one)
• Triangle (can be small, 12” or under, 30-60 or 45 degree)
• Rag and baby wipes (to clean tools and your hands)

Optional items (don’t bog yourself down, but you may want some of these):

• Micron pens in other colors and sizes
• Other favorite pointed pens
• A couple tubes of watercolor or gouache
• Dishes and mixing brushes for items above
• Slant board (if that’s how you want to write)
• Cushion or pillow for chair
• A few SMALL rubber stamps and a couple favorite pads
• Bring snacks if you want, since this class is during dinnertime!

Students who have taken a Marbling Class and have fallen in love, not only with the magical process of marbling, but also the gorgeous product they have created, often ask what they can do with their pieces. This class will involve students in 3 different projects: Making a beautiful and durable gift bag, Making a 4” round box, Making a 4” square box.

Supply list: Students can bring their own marbled paper, or other special paper they would like to use, or use marbled paper provided by Pietro.

Have you ever desired a sketchbook that includes more than one type of paper? Or perhaps a certain size? This class teaches you how to make your own unique sketchbook with endless possibilities for paper type, color, size and thickness. Once you learn the basics of sketchbook making, it is a great way to recycle and reuse stray papers and makes a great gift for friends and family that enjoy journaling or sketching. The class covers book making techniques and students will learn the French link stitch for the book binding. Participants will also be given a zine that covers all the instructions from the class for reference.

Supplies: Students are required to bring their own paper for the sketchbook pages. The paper must be 8.5 inches by 11 inches or 11 inches by 17 inches. If it is larger, it should be trimmed down to one of these sizes prior to the start of the class. Paper should also be text or book weight, between 60lb to 80lb. Please bring a minimum of 24 sheets of your 8.5 in by 11 in or 11 in by 17 in text pages. Cover weight paper for the sketchbook cover will be provided. 

This introductory class explores both the form and content of the book with consideration to its movement, alternate readings, and potential sculptural effects. The lotus fold invokes play and experimentation; lending itself to discovery and surprise in both the maker and viewer. We will explore various methods of content generating using hand processes with emphasis on pochoir. Students will leave with their own finished artist book. We will cover a variety of basic bookbinding techniques including proper folding and gluing practices.

In this two-day workshop students will create their own marbled designs on three different silk scarves.

During the first day we will discuss and practice patterns and color combinations that work well for marbled silk scarves. Students will have ample practice time to experiment and develop their vision in the standard marbling tray before moving on to the large scarf tray.

On day two we will prepare two 20” x 72” trays to create silk scarves. Students will take turns on these trays to execute each scarf with the assistance of the instructor.
