Introduction to Western Paper Marbling

In this introductory class, student will gain a basic understanding of history, techniques, tools and styles of Western marbling. Students will get hands on experience of all aspects of marbling from paper priming and preparatory mixing of water medium and paints, to the creation of classic patterns. Specific attention will be given to learning how to obtain particular designs using a diverse array of rakes and combs. Students will have ample time for experimentation with guidance from the instructor.

Introduction to Linocut Printing: Birds

Learn to carve simple, beautiful patterns or images in linoleum and print them using Japanese hand printing techniques. The images of birds we’ll be working with in this class lend themselves especially well to this versatile printmaking process. Found images can be transformed into vibrantly layered compositions using Katherine’s easy transfer and carving techniques. Everyone will leave with a small edition of prints of birds. You’ll learn all about the tools, techniques and resources you need to be begin linoleum carving and printing at home.

Introduction to Textile Marbling

This popular marbling workshop will introduce students marbling techniques on fabric that can be used for covering books and boxes. Students will begin the day by working on basic marbling skills. With the instructor’s guidance, they will work on new patterns with an eye for nuance. The main focus will be on marbling fabric to create book cloth, and techniques for other textile uses will also be discussed. At the end of the day, the instructor will demonstrate how to prepare pieces of marbled cloth for use in bookbinding. Students will leave with their own stack of marbled fabric pieces. All materials provided with registration.

Textile Marbling on Scarves

In this 2 day workshop students will create their own  marbled designs on 3 different silk scarves. During the first day we will discuss and practice patterns and color combinations that work well for marbled silk scarves. Students will have ample practice time to experiment and develop their vision in the standard marbling tray before moving on to the large scarf tray. Day two we will prepare two 20” x 72” trays for the silk. Students will take turns on these trays to execute each scarf with the assistance of the instructor.

Holiday Cards: Wood Type Printing on the Press

Letterpress print your holiday cards using antique wood and metal type on Katherine’s Vandercook letterpress. During this fun day at Katherine’s studio, Meridian Press, you will learn the basics of letterpress printing: setting type, locking it up in the press, mixing ink and completing an edition of up to 25 two-color greeting cards. Envelopes will also be included.

Please bring an apron and some ideas for holiday cards. We will also look at at plenty of samples for ideas during class.

Hand-carved Blocks with Watercolor: Winter Botanicals

Hand-colored linocut prints combine the dramatic presence of a linocut with the versatility and vibrant hues of watercolor painting. During the first session of class students will learn will the basics of carving and printing a linocut print by hand.  Students will carve into traditional battleship gray linoleum as well as the newer Gomuban carving substrate. An oil-based relief printing ink will be used to create the perfect resist for session two, when watercolor and colored pencil techniques will be utilized to brighten up the black and white prints. Students will leave with a set of varied and vibrantly-colored prints.
