Clay: Earthworks

Create decorative and functional pottery in this five-week class designed for the beginner as well as those who have taken intermediate pottery classes in the past.  Students will learn how to work with clay in both hand building, and wheel-throwing techniques. Finishing methods such as decorating, stamping, painting, and staining will be introduced as well as the discussion and practice of firing and glazing of clay works. Stoneware clay will be used and cone 6 and cone 06 glazes will be available.  All firings will be done by the museum in an electric kiln. All materials are provided.

Ceramics: Open Studio

Intermediate and advanced level students will enjoy developing their hand building and/or wheel throwing techniques in this open studio ceramics class. Instructor will introduce students to new techniques, will encourage experimentation and will assist students with independent challenges.  Studio, clay and glazes are provided.

Kids’ Corner: Clay Ornaments

Kids of all ages will enjoy playing in clay with their parents as they create holiday ornaments. Families will create keepsake ornaments in this fun and messy class. Class will be run as a two-hour open studio and families are encouraged to stay for as little or as long as they would like. Ornaments will fired be ready to pick up one week after the class.

Ceramic Workshop: Teapots

Learn how to make all of the elements needed to create your own teapot! We will be throwing on a pottery wheel and hand building to make a functional teapot. Spout, handle and lid construction will be covered. All pieces will be fired and ready to be picked up two weeks after class.

Learn how to marble different kinds of clay together to create fun effects with different colors and clay bodies. We will be throwing on a pottery wheel and hand building making mostly functional pottery. Bring in your fun ideas, we can make anything! All pieces will be fired and given a clear coat of glaze ready to be picked up two weeks after class.

Ceramic Pumpkin Workshop

Create beautiful one of a kind ceramic pumpkins! Each student will receive a variety of closed forms or, if they are more advanced, can throw their own closed form with a little instruction. We will then carve them into pumpkins of all shapes and sizes. Pumpkins can be glazed in a variety of colors and will be ready to be picked up by the following Sunday!

Ceramic Workshop: Intro to Underglazes

Learn the basics of under glazing, color theory, and mixing glazes. Explore underglazes mixing together your own colors. Design and glaze your own tiles and a planter or vase. Underglazes mix and apply more like a traditional paint able to be mixed and layered which makes under glazing not only a great skill to understand for any potter but a more approachable style of glazing for anyone new to pottery. Under glazed pottery will be given a clear coat and a mid-firing to make it completely functional.

Ceramic Workshop: Intro to Scraffito

Learn the basics of scraffito practicing on pre-made green wear tiles and a vase or planter. Students will learn the basics of additive and subtractive scraffito practice use of negative and positive space and have a beautiful functional vase/planter. All pieces will be fired and given a clear coat of glaze ready to be picked up two weeks after class.

Fall Break Young Artist Series: Hand Building and Wheel Throwing Techniques

Kids ages 11 – 15 will have fun exploring the tactile nature of clay. Instruction will encompass basic hand building, throwing on the wheel, and sculpture. In this 5 day intensive for young artists, students will learn about the basics of pottery, glazing and the transformation of their pieces from the heat of kiln. This will be a fun and educational class. All works will be fired in the Museum’s kiln. All materials are included.

Monday – Friday, October 7- 11
