Wednesdays, August 16 – September 20 / 6 – 9 pm
Create decorative and functional pottery in this six-week class designed for the beginner as well as those who have taken intermediate pottery classes in the past. Students will learn how to work with clay in both hand building, and wheel-throwing techniques. Finishing methods such as decorating, stamping, painting, and staining will be introduced as well as the discussion and practice of firing and glazing of clay works. Stoneware clay will be used and cone 6 and cone 06 glazes will be available. All firings will be done by the museum in an electric kiln. All materials are provided.

Summer Intensive: Portrait Sculpture – A Beginning Approach
Monday – Friday, July 17 – 21 / 1 – 4 pm
Portrait Sculpture: A Beginning Approach is an introductory course designed to introduce the student to a three-dimensional approach to clay portraiture. Students will learn the basic anatomy of the human head including, but not limited to the “string technique” of realism, and textures as well as the detailed sculpting of facial features such as eyes and ears, and the mouth and nose. Students will be encouraged to work in life-size measurements from specific resources (e.g. a live model or photo reference) or may elect to create a bust from their imagination. Students will sculpt their busts in an oil-based clay. Mold-making and casting methods will be discussed in order that students may work toward final mold and casting selections (i.e. plaster, bronze, etc.) if desired. All materials included with registration.

Summer Intensive: Clay – Handbuilding and Wheel Throwing
Monday – Friday, July 10 – 14 / 1:30 – 4:30 pm
Create decorative and functional pottery in this five-day intensive designed for the beginner as well as those who have taken intermediate pottery classes in the past. Students explore clay handbuilding and wheel-throwing techniques. Demonstrations will include working with slips and slabs and playing with image transfers onto clay. Finishing methods such as decorating, stamping, painting, and staining will be introduced as well as the discussion and practice of firing and glazing of clay works. All materials are provided.

Monday – Friday, March 20 – 24 / 1:30 – 4:30 pm
Teens ages 13 – 18 will have fun exploring the tactile nature of clay. Instruction will encompass basic hand building, throwing on the wheel, and sculpture. In this 5 day intensive for teens, students will learn about the basics of pottery, glazing and the transformation of their pieces from the heat of kiln. This will be a fun and educational class. All works will be fired in the Museums’ kiln. All materials are included.

Young artists will enjoy exploring the qualities of clay in this fun after-school series. Students will have the opportunity to hand build and experiment on the pottery wheel. All materials and a snack are included with registration.
