Art High: Clay Intensive

Monday, October 3 – Friday, October 7 / 1 – 4 pm

Teens ages 13 – 18 will have fun exploring the tactile nature of clay.  Instruction will encompass basic hand building, throwing on the wheel, and sculpture.  In this 5 day intensive for teens, students will learn about the basics of pottery, glazing and the transformation of their pieces from the heat of kiln. This will be a fun and educational class.  All works will be fired in the Museums’ kiln. All materials are included.

Clay: Earthworks – Special Glaze Session

This session is designed for students who have completed the March/April session of Clay: Earthworks and would like to have one additional opportunity to complete their glaze work.  Students registering should have a selection of their own bisque ware that was created in a previous session of Clay: Earthworks.

Summer Intensive: Portrait Sculpture – A Beginning Approach

Monday – Friday, June 20 – 24 / 1 – 4 pm

Portrait Sculpture: A Beginning Approach is an introductory course designed to introduce the student to a three-dimensional approach to clay portraiture.  Students will learn the basic anatomy of the human head including, but not limited to the “string technique” of realism, and textures as well as the detailed sculpting of facial features such as eyes and ears, and the mouth and nose.  Students will be encouraged to work in life-size measurements from specific resources (e.g. a live model or photo reference) or may elect to create a bust from their imagination.  Students will sculpt their busts in an oil-based clay.  Mold-making and casting methods will be discussed in order that students may work toward final mold and casting selections (i.e. plaster, bronze, etc.) if desired. All materials included with registration.

Tuesday – Thursday, July 12 – 14 / 1 – 4 pm

Students will enjoy this casual summer clay series while working from rolled slabs of clay.  Students will experiment with the application of slips to create beautiful works in clay. All materials included with registration.

Clay: Earthworks

Wednesdays, January 13 – February 17 / 6 – 9 pm

Create decorative and functional pottery in this six-week class designed for the beginner as well as those who have taken intermediate pottery classes in the past.  Students will learn how to work with clay in both hand building, and wheel-throwing techniques. Finishing methods such as decorating, stamping, painting, and staining will be introduced as well as the discussion and practice of firing and glazing of clay works. Stoneware clay will be used and cone 6 and cone 06 glazes will be available.  All firings will be done by Museum in an electric kiln. All materials are provided.
