Introduction to Watercolors

This class is designed for anyone who would like to explore the medium of watercolor without the commitment.  Learn techniques such as washes, glazing, wet on wet and much more.  Find out if watercolor is for you.  The class is great for beginners who would like to experiment with watercolor techniques in an instructive setting. Open to all levels, beginners welcome.

Linocuts: Botanical Blossoms

CANCELED: Learn to carve simple, beautiful patterns or images in linoleum and print them using Japanese hand printing techniques. The botanical images we’ll be working with in this class lend themselves especially well to this versatile printmaking process. Found images can be transformed into vibrantly layered compositions using Katherine’s easy transfer and carving techniques. Everyone will leave with a small edition of botanical prints. You’ll learn all about the tools, techniques and resources you need to be begin linoleum carving and printing at home.

Book Arts: Coptic-Style Hardcover Journal

Create a beautiful hardcover journal with exposed sewing on the spine and inventive book covers. The Coptic-Ctyle book an ancient structure that combines beauty and durability. In addition to learning this extraordinary technique, you will learn how to easily adapt the structure to create a photo album. Some bookbinding experience is helpful but not required.

Introduction to Western Paper Marbling

In this introductory class, student will gain a basic understanding of history, techniques, tools and styles of Western marbling. Students will get hands on experience of all aspects of marbling from paper priming and preparatory mixing of water medium and paints, to the creation of classic patterns. Specific attention will be given to learning how to obtain particular designs using a diverse array of rakes and combs. Students will have ample time for experimentation with guidance from the instructor.

Watercolor Geraniums: From Studies to Composition

CANCELED: Using potted geraniums as subjects, students will learn the process of creating compositions from their own studies.  Wet and dry techniques, hard and soft edges, and texturing will be explored.  Watercolor experience is recommended.

Improve your caricature drawing skills and explore a variety of media in this fun and encouraging class. Students will be taught classic drawing techniques using line, value and composition while focusing on the head, facial expression, hands and overall pose.

Camera Basics for DSLR and Mirrorless Cameras

This class is designed for beginning to intermediate photographers who have purchased a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera, which is a camera with removable lenses. Course participants will explore the specific features of DSLR cameras, as well as general photographic skills and techniques to make great pictures.

Wednesday and Thursday, February 19 and 20

Ages: 15 and up / All levels

Required Supplies: Students are required to bring a DSLR camera, as well as their camera’s manual. A fully charged battery and memory card are also necessary for class. Any lenses that they own should also be brought to class.

Fused Glass Earring and Pendant Workshop

Learn to create beautiful fused glass earrings and pendants. Each person can choose to make: Option #1 (1) set of earrings and (1) pendant, Option #2 (3) sets of earrings, or option #3 (2) pendants. Findings or backings are all attached later, by the teacher, to the artwork to ensure all jewelry can be worn. Students will learn to cut flat glass, use frits, stringers, dichroic sparkly glass, and even pebbles to create beautiful hand-made jewelry. All work is created in molds that are later fired. All materials come with the class.
