Botanical Illustration: Summer Bouquet

Using the colorful blossoms of Summer as subject matter, this class will explore the world of botanical illustration. Explore basic drawing, composition ink and watercolor techniques to capture the beauty of the season. This class welcomes beginners and students from previous botanical workshops.

Back to Basics: Exploring Drawing Mediums

Mondays, March 7 – April 11 / 6 – 9 pm

Beginning and returning students will enjoy a six week series exploring the various qualities of different drawing mediums.  In this course students will expand on their drawing skills by learning how to use colored pencil, pen & ink, and oil pastel in new and exciting ways. Students will be introduced to drawing techniques that are specific to each medium and will have the opportunity to apply them through still life, drawing from a photo and portraiture.

Required Supplies:

  • Prismacolor Colored Pencils (Student’s choice of 12-36 count)

  • Acetone (can purchase at Home Depot or other hardware store)

Draw, Print, Repeat: Experiments in Repeating Patterns

Wednesdays, April 20 – May 4 / 6 – 8:30 pm

Students of all levels are invited to explore basic drawing and printing techniques to create beautiful hand printed textiles. Learn the basics of pattern design through a three class series that will teach you to gather inspiration through mood boards, brainstorm and sketch your own unique designs, and translate your ideas into handmade stamps that you will use to create seamlessly repeating patterns onto fabric yardage. You will also learn the basics of color selection, scale, and composition for your pieces, helping you create a collection of complimentary textile designs. The techniques learned in this series will carry you through a myriad of decor projects that you can easily replicate on your own for home decor and personal projects after the series is complete. Casey will be sharing all of her best tips and tricks for building a beautiful body of hand printed textile work.

Supply list: Fabric swatches, magazines, or any other inspiration pieces from home to use for creating mood boards. All other supplies are provided by the Museum.

Drawing Portraits in Charcoal

Thursdays, April 14 – May 19 / 6 – 9 pm

Students will be introduced to a variety of techniques to help improve their portrait drawing skills. Topics covered will include the divisions of the head, two-value block-in, rhythm lines, lost edges and much more. The first two classes will be based in instruction while the remaining four classes will be dedicated to drawing from a live model.

Animal Illustrations in Ink and Watercolor

Sunday, April 17 / 10 am – 3 pm

Learn to combine the texturing of ink and the vibrancy of watercolor to create whimsical works of animals and plants.  This class is designed to teach basic approaches to animal illustrations.  No experience necessary.

Watercolor Paint, Paper (140 lb cold press) and Pallet.

Radiant Mandalas: Meditative Drawing and Journaling

Wednesday, December 16 / 10 am – 2 pm

Participants will explore the origins of the mandala (radiant) and the significance of these designs in various cultures. They will experience the joy of learning the construction techniques that allow the inner self to manifest in a physical design filled with color and intricacy. Students will learn to still their minds and bodies in order to relax and allow mandalas to flow onto the paper. They will discover through the significance of color and points the inner world they reveal. All necessary materials will be provided but, if you have already have a journal and your own colored pencils and pens that you enjoy using, please bring them.
