Life Drawing: Open Studio

Wednesdays, June 3 – 24 / 6 – 9 pm

Improve your life drawing skills and explore a variety of media while working freely from a nude model in this popular open studio class. The instructor will be present to coordinate class and offer instruction upon request. Both male and female models will be posed and drawn.

Suggested Supplies: 
The following are suggested basic supplies – all media are welcome, so please bring whatever supplies you need for whichever media you are using. 
– Drawing board – 20”x 26” or larger (light-weight masonite works best) 
– Newsprint pad – 18”x 24” – rough surface recommended 
– Bull dog clamps or similar to attach pad to board 
– Vine charcoal, thin and fat pieces
– Choice of conte crayon, 6B graphite pencil or sticks, china marker, compressed charcoal, carbon pencils, or any suitable medium for drawing on newsprint 
– Large kneaded eraser 
– Pink pearl eraser
– Portable pencil sharpener or utility knife (best for soft/medium pencils)
– Clean small rags 
– Sandpaper pad for sharpening drawing mediums 
– Stumps for blending (optional)

Drawing the Figure

Tuesdays, May 12 – June 16 / 9 am – noon

This all encompassing course teaches structure, proportions, form and perspective of human anatomy. Students will draw from posed nude models and will be critiqued and guided according to their ability. Whether beginning or advanced, all skill levels are welcome

Supply List: Ebony pencil, General’s white charcoal pencils, conte chalk (black and/or brown), kneadable and soft white erasers, charcoal sticks and 18×24″ newsprint tablet.

Radiant Mandalas: Meditative Drawing and Journaling

Thursday, May 28 / 10 am – 2 pm

Participants will explore the origins of the mandala (radiant) and the significance of these designs in various cultures. They will experience the joy of learning the construction techniques that allow the inner self to manifest in a physical design filled with color and intricacy. Students will learn to still their minds and bodies in order to relax and allow mandalas to flow onto the paper. They will discover through the significance of color and points the inner world they reveal. All necessary materials will be provided but, if you have already have a journal and your own colored pencils and pens that you enjoy using, please bring them.

Explorations in Pen & Ink

Thursdays, July 23 and 30 / 5:30 – 8:30 pm

Work from favorite photographs to create realistic interpretive drawing using just pen and ink. Instructor will introduce students to the various techniques in pen and ink including stippling, cross hatching and washes.

Supply List: Smooth drawing paper, precise rolling ball pens, quill pens and inks, brushes for ink washes, pencil (for preliminary sketching), personal or collected photos for reference.

Flora and Fauna in Ink and Watercolor

Learn to combine the texturing of ink and the vibrancy of watercolor to create whimsical works with plants and animals. Students will work from photo subjects or may bring their own preliminary sketches. No experience necessary.

Supply List: 

  • Basic watercolor kit
  • No 8 or No 6 pointed watercolor brush 
  • 140 lb tablet of cold press watercolor paper (hot press for more advanced students)
  • Micron black ink pens 005 and 01
  • Sketch pad, pencil and eraser

Botanical Illustration: Summer Fruit

Using the luscious fruit of Summer as subject matter, this class will explore the world of botanical illustration. Learn basic drawing, ink and watercolor techniques to capture the beauty of the season. This class welcomes beginners and students from previous botanical workshops.

Supply List:

  • Tablet of 140# Watercolor paper (Casson, Arches, or Strathmore) 
  • Small round 10 well pallet with plastic lid 
  • Sketch tablet or paper 
  • Basic watercolor set (Reeves or Richardson set of 12 is fine, or your own set)
  • 2 drawing or mechanical pencils
  • Arubber eraser 
  • Fine point (005) black ink pen, MUST be waterproof 
  • Two plastic water containers

Introduction to Botanical Art

Learn to create beautiful botanical illustrations in watercolor. This class offers step by step instruction, demonstrations and individualized help. No previous art experience necessary.

  • Kneaded eraser 2 each 9”x12” pieces of arches watercolor paper* 
  • NOTE: paper can be purchased from instructor during class for $2 per sheet

Bugs and Blossoms in Ink and Watercolor

June 7 and 14 / 10 am – 2 pm

Learn to combine the texturing of ink and the vibrancy of watercolor to create whimsical works with focusing on bugs and beautiful blossoms. Students will work from photo subjects or may bring their own preliminary sketches. No experience necessary.

Art High: Portraits in Paint

Tuesdays, February 24 – March 24 / 3:30 – 5:30 pm

Teens ages 13 – 18 will enjoy exploring portrait through line, value, shading and composition while working in acrylic paint. Students will explore basic sketching and painting techniques to better understand their subject matter and materials.

Supply List: Student to supply a 18 x 24″ newsprint drawing pad. A variety of painting and drawing materials will be provided for use in class.
