Alterations 101: Learn to Alter or Repair

Do you have a piece of clothing that you’ve always wanted to fix or alter? This is the class for you! Bring in any article(s) of clothing that need alterations or repairing except for clothing with waterproofing material. Students will work under the guidence of the instructor and learn introductory techniques for altering and repairing your clothing. Some experience is helpful but not necessary. The Museum will have sewing machines and supplies for students. 

*Note: Only bring in your machine if you are very familiar with using it.

Introduction to Western Paper Marbling

In this introductory class, student will gain a basic understanding of history, techniques, tools and styles of Western marbling. Students will get hands on experience of all aspects of marbling from paper priming and preparatory mixing of water medium and paints, to the creation of classic patterns. Specific attention will be given to learning how to obtain particular designs using a diverse array of rakes and combs. Students will have ample time for experimentation with guidance from the instructor.

Join this workshop and have fun making an adorable lil’ elf, perfect to hang, sit on a shelf, or give as a gift during the upcoming holiday season. In this workshop, the instructor will cover the basics of needle felting, while you learn to create these three-dimensional unique elves with fun little faces.. This course is perfect for the beginner or more advanced student. All materials will be provided.

Introduction to Western Paper Marbling

This popular marbling workshop will introduce students marbling techniques on fabric that can be used for covering books and boxes. Students will begin the day by working on basic marbling skills. With the instructor’s guidance, they will work on new patterns with an eye for nuance. The main focus will be on marbling fabric to create book cloth, and techniques for other textile uses will also be discussed. At the end of the day, the instructor will demonstrate how to prepare pieces of marbled cloth for use in bookbinding. Students will leave with their own stack of 15 marbled fabric pieces. All materials provided with registration.

In this 4-hour workshop, students will have the opportunity to marble 3 hats.  Pietro will show students how to print on the baseball hats using an array of different patterns and colors that you can choose from.  After some guided practice with some of your favorite colors, students will then have the opportunity to marble 3 beautiful hats.

Textile Marbling on Scarves

Witness this magical process that transfers the paint from the surface of the water to a silk scarf. In this one-day workshop, Pietro will show students how to print on silk scarves using an array of different patterns and colors that you can choose from.  After some guided practice with some of your favorite colors, students will have the opportunity to paint 2 beautiful scarves.

Learn sewing machine basics with your machine. Bring in your recently serviced sewing machine and we will help you build a relationship starting with the basics. This class covers: threading the machine, threading the bobbin, making a bobbin, thread varieties, needle varieties and uses, foot selection, stitch varieties and purposes, steering techniques, ways to mend a hole on a sewing machine and sewing machine maintenance. 

If you do not have a machine but are interested in learning, we do have a limited selection of machines for use.

Sewing: Christmas Stocking

Have a new addition to the family or want to replace your current stocking(s) with handmade unique ones? In this class, under the guidance of the instructor, students will work to create unique, personalized stocking(s) and will have the freedom to make the piece completely customizable to what you are looking to create. 

Note: The Museum School will have a limited number of Singer Brilliant 6180 sewing machines for students to use but you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer.

  • ½ yard of fabric per stocking
