Watercolor Foundations: Watercolor for Beginners

This class is for students who are new to watercolor or have worked on their own and are looking to improve their watercolor skills with step-by-step instructions. The instructor will discuss various watercolor supplies and suggest appropriate starting materials. Students will learn to recognize various levels of paper wetness and how to use them to achieve the desired watercolor effects. Under the guidance of the instructor, students will also practice various techniques such as basic color mixing, brush strokes, various types of washes and more.

Painting Intensive: The Portrait in Oil or Acrylics

Students will be introduced to portrait painting techniques in this weekend intensive. Instructor will cover such topics as using a two-color palette, value scales, keying a painting, as well as, using both line and mass to create a portrait. Students may use acrylic or oil paint.

Working in oil paint, students will explore value divisions in landscapes and the basics of brush sketching and massing. With these skills students will learn how to relate color to value and will gain a better understanding of identifying spatial cues in a landscape. Using foundational skills students can then explore under-painting, glazing and dry-brushing techniques.

Using color and shape, this class will focus on a different style of painting each day. Students will learn new techniques and create a different piece of art each day ranging from lifelike to abstract. Students will learn the foundations of drawing and color theory which can be applied to various practices and mediums in art.

Cards in Watercolor

Join this class to create festive cards for the winter season. Under the guidance of the instructor, students will be using ‘wet on wet’ and ‘wet on dry’ watercolor techniques. There will be a variety of card designs to choose from or feel free to create your own using personal inspiration.

Watercolor on Aqua Board

Open up new possibilities with your watercolors by painting on Ampersand’s Aqua Board panels. Once complete, these paintings can then be sealed for protection, using either a cold wax or spray varnish, and framed without glass. In this class, students will understand how to prep the boards before painting, learn how easy it is to fix problem areas, how to keep washes smooth, and adding layers and values. A working knowledge of watercolors is preferred.

Watercolor: Tips, Tricks and Techniques

In this workshop, I will share with you some really great tips, tricks and techniques I have learned along the way, either through my own experimentation or from some pretty amazing artists including Carl Purcell, Karen Frey, the late, great, Charles Reid, and John Salminen. You don’t need to be an expert for this class; I’ll show you how a lot of special effects are accomplished, and how to get those really great darks that make your paintings exceptional! No middle-value blah paintings here!

*This class will be held in the Redfield Learning Center on the 3rd floor of the Museum. 

Sunday, November 6

1 or 2 artist-quality watercolors and brushes, size 8 and 6 rounds are great; a 2” or 3” Hake brush and an inexpensive rigger for masking.

Watercolor paper – 1 full 22×30” sheet of good quality watercolor paper (Arches or Fabriano), cold press

  • 1 piece 16×20” foam core or other stiff board to mount paper to
  • Masking tape
  • Masking fluid
  • Small container of salt
  • Small bar of soap (hotel sized type)
  • Paper towels
  • Generously sized container for water
  • 1 sheet graphite transfer paper
  • Ball-point pen for tracing image (suggest blue or red to see where you’ve traced)
  • Spray bottle for water (small Windex bottle works great)
  • Blow dryer
  • 1 clean baby food jar or similar small container with secure lid

Animals in Ink and Watercolor

Interested in learning how to paint animals? In this class, students will work with the instructor to learn techniques to create whimsical animal portraits in watercolor and ink. Using a simple approach, this style is great for journaling and greeting cards.

Hand Painted Ornaments

Inspired by her Czechoslovakian heritage, instructor Iva Neveux will introduce student to basic painting techniques to create beautiful holiday ornaments. Each student will create two hand-painted ornaments using combinations of dots, lines, dashes and curves.  All materials included with registration.
