Botanical Illustration: Winter Gourds

Learn the techniques of botanical illustration to capture the bounty of winter gourds in watercolor.  Students with watercolor experience and those new to watercolor are welcome.

Oil Painting: The Figure in the Landscape

Working in oil paint, students will explore value divisions while focusing on the figure in the landscape. Drawing inspiration from the photographs of Anne Brigman (on view in the Museum through January 2019), students will focus on composition and the ways in which the figure compliments the environment. Students will explore the basics of brush sketching and massing, identifying spatial cues in a landscape and will explore under-painting, glazing and dry-brushing techniques. Students will work from photo-reference as well as a live model in the final sessions.

Each class will begin with brief instruction followed by an open studio format painting class. Students may use acrylic or oil paint. Dry media is also welcome.

The final three classes will have utilize a live model for reference.

Winter in the Sierra: Watercolor Workshop

Watercolor for Beginners: Lavender Fields

Tuesday – Thursday, September 25 – 27 / 1:30 – 4:30 pm

This three-session course will focus on the importance of value and depth in landscape paintings. The subject of lavender fields will first be explored in a monochromatic painting, focusing on value as well as wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry watercolor techniques. In the following sessions students will explore color mixing and will apply the value lessons learned from monochromatic study to full color spectrum paintings.

Landscapes in Oil: Dramatic Skies

Beginning and advanced students will enjoy this five-day technique-based class focused on creating dramatic landscapes with special attention paid to the sky. Working from photo reference, students will explore the use of sensitive and effective strokes to manipulate paint with a brush and pallet knife. Students will explore texture and depth while creating dramatic landscape paintings.
