Capture the beauty of autumn leaves. Using the techniques of botanical illustration learn to create pictures and cards in watercolor, pencil and ink. This class is open to all levels.

Thursdays, October 12 – November 9 / 1 – 4 pm

Beginning and experienced students will enjoy this five-week open studio format watercolor series. Students are invited to bring works in progress or begin new projects in this fun and social series. Each class will begin with a short lesson addressing a challenge or technique followed by open studio time to continue work on personal projects. Instructor will be on hand to assist with challenges, offer critique, instruction and encouragement.

Supply List: Please bring any supplies you own for your specific project. A recommended basic supply list is as follows:

• Watercolors: Cobalt Blue, Phthalo Blue, Lemon Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Magenta, Sap Green, New Gamboge, Yellow Ochre. (Cotman or Van Gogh is fine; Windsor Newton is excellent)
• Your personal watercolor pallet
• 2 HB Pencils
• Watercolor Brushes: #6 & #10 Round (Silver/Black brand is recommended and available at Nevada Fine Arts)
• Pad of Arches 140# cold press watercolor paper
• Roll of paper towels

Learn the skills used in creating beautiful paintings using translucent watercolors.Beginners will learn the basics of pallet set up, color mixing and a range of watercolor techniques including washes, dry brush work and “special effects.”

Supply List:

• Watercolors: Cobalt Blue, Phthalo Blue, Lemon Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Magenta, Sap Green, New Gamboge, Yellow Ochre. (Cotman or Van Gogh is fine; Windsor Newton is excellent)
• Plastic studio pallet with at least 10 paint wells

Using the late summer colors of blooming sunflowers, as subject matter, this class will explore the world of botanical illustration. Explore basic drawing, ink and watercolor techniques to capture the beauty of the season. This class welcomes beginners and students from previous botanical workshops.

Class will work on small sample pieces for each technique, with room for notes and experimentation. Instructor will reference such artists as Carl Purcell, Karen Frey, Charles Reid and John Salminen. Students do not need to be an expert watercolorist for this class but will enjoy learning more about how to create special effects and contrast to make your paintings sparkle.

• Watercolor* sketch book, 5×7 or larger. For your samples and notes.  I recommend Stillman & Birn’s Beta Series, Arches Field sketchbooks, and Moleskin. Check NV Fine Arts in Reno or online. Or buy a full sheet of Arches 140 lb cold press and cut/tear it into eight 5.5×7.5 pieces.
• Pen and pencil, to sketch with and take notes.
• Watercolor** brushes: A #6 and #10 round, and a 1” flat, will be adequate. I recommend Silver’s Black Velvet brushes as an excellent, not-too-expensive choice.
• Watercolor paints of your choice. “Artist grade” paint, please – colors are stronger and more vivid.  My favorite colors are listed at the end of this, if you’re interested.
• Watercolor palette of your choice. I recommend having a few good-sized mixing areas, but bring whatever you’re comfortable working with.
• Water Container
• Small container of salt
• Spray bottle for water
• Sea sponge if you have one. If not, you can watch the demonstrated techniques and see if you like them.

• Blow Dryer

Monday – Friday, August 14 – 18 / 9 am – noon

Students will enjoy traveling to scenic outdoor locations near downtown Reno while learning how to paint small color sketches or studies (“pochades”) using oils. This class will focus on how to capture light in the landscape quickly while working with oil paint. Hands-on instruction will take students from basic setup to finish a quick outdoor study in plein air. First class will meet in the E.L. Cord Museum School with the remaining classes held offsite at scenic locations. Students should have a good foundation in color mixing and some experience painting with oils.

Sundays, August 27 – September 17 / 1 – 4 pm

Students will enjoy developing their painting techniques and skills in this observational open studio class.  Weekly subject matter will rotate focus between portrait painting, observational painting from nude and clothed models and still-lifes. Each class will begin with brief instruction followed by an open studio format painting class. Students may use acrylic or oil paint. Dry media is also welcome.

Student new to oil or looking for a quick refresher will enjoy this introductory level course designed to teach basic oil painting techniques. Students will learn the properties of oil paint, application techniques, and color theory while recreating simple still life installations. Each class will focus on different painting techniques which will include a review of brushes and their function, blending techniques, color use and the grayscale and an introduction to textures.
