Intermediate/Advanced DSLR Camera Use

Tuesdays, September 22 – October 6 / 6 – 9 pm

This class is designed for photographers working with a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera. Course participants will explore the specific features of DSLR cameras, as well as general photographic skills and techniques to improve their photography skills.  DSLR Camera Basics is a recommended -pre-requisite for this class, though photographers with some camera experience are welcome to register.

Supply List: Students are required to bring have a DSLR camera, as well as their camera’s manual. A fully charged battery and memory card are also necessary for class. Any lenses that they own should also be brought to class.

Photography: Lighting with Studio Strobes

Wednesdays, October 14 – 28 / 6 – 9 pm

Learn in a working studio the advantages of using studio strobe lights. Some features include: freezing action when shooting people or objects, consistent color temperature, lots of light power and how to combine strobe and continuous light to create motion. Students will shoot live models and will receive an overview of lighting basics, safety, and exposure techniques.  NOTE: Classes are taught off site at Jeff Ross’ Studio.

This class is designed for beginning to intermediate photographers who have purchased a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera, which is a camera with removable lenses. Course participants will explore the specific features of DSLR cameras, as well as general photographic skills and techniques to make great pictures.

Studio Photography: Portraiture

Wednesdays, August 12 – 26 / 6 – 9 pm

Explore portrait photography in a professional studio environment. Students will work with live models and will experiment with various qualities of light, including natural and artificial, framing and composition and variations in the photographic environment. Students will examine the work of photographers such as Arnold Newman, Karsh, Platon and others. NOTE: Classes are taught off site at Jeff Ross’ Studio.

Photoshop Toolbox: Retouching Images

Saturday, July 18 / 10 am – 2 pm

Students will gain an understanding of retouching techniques to enhance both portraits and landscape photographs. Improve textures, fix “problem areas,” and gain an understanding of industry trade secrets to add to your toolbox.

Supply List: Photoshop CS6 or higher at their home computer or laptop. If you are not bringing your laptop to class, please bring a notebook or tablet for note taking. Some basic Photoshop experience required (i.e. our Photoshop 101 course)

Photoshop 101: A Crash Course for Beginners

Saturdays, May 16 & 23 / 10 am – 2 pm

Beginning photographers/digital artists/graphic designers will enjoy a crash course introduction to Photoshop. Class will be lecture based. Laptops are welcome but not required. Students should have Photoshop CS6 or higher at their home computer or laptop. Lesson plans will be provided through a Dropbox link to enrolled students, paper handouts will also be made available. Basic overview will include the user-end interface of Photoshop, importing and saving images, understanding and using the layers panel including basic photo editing applications and drawing tools.

Studio Portraits 1-2-3

Wednesdays, February 25 – March 11 / 6 – 9 pm

Learn studio portraiture using just one light, then two lights and then three lights. This course is a hands-on experience using artificial lighting, including continuous light, portable flash, studio strobe and fluorescent to create portraits with depth and drama. Students will work in a professional studio.

Laptop Lecture: Introduction to Lightroom

Saturdays, February 7 and 14 / 10 am – 2 pm

Adobe Lightroom is quickly becoming the go to application for photographers of any experience level, but so many photographers are not using the application to the fullest potential. There are also features of Lightroom that are best left to other applications, and those work arounds will be shown in class. From tethered shooting to advanced Develop module techniques, this class with get new Lightroom users up and running, and advanced users taking advantage of features that will save time, and reduce frustration.

A laptop is not necessary for this class, but having one will not hurt, as students can work along with the instructor during class. Files for the class will take up 6-8 GB of space, and students should have that amount of space free on their computers if they want to work along with the instructor.
