Screens in the School: Night of the Living Dead

Come join us at the E.L. Cord Museum School for a night of fright and fun! This October we are screening the cult classic: Night of the Living Dead. Participants will screen-print movie posters, take home a custom Zine with fun movie facts and engage in lively discussions with local cinephiles!

Holiday Cards: Wood Type Printing on the Press

Letterpress print your holiday cards using antique wood and metal type on Katherine’s Vandercook letterpress. During this fun day at Katherine’s studio, Meridian Press, you will learn the basics of letterpress printing: setting type, locking it up in the press, mixing ink and completing an edition of up to 25 two-color greeting cards. Envelopes will also be included.

Please bring an apron and some ideas for holiday cards. We will also look at at plenty of samples for ideas during class.

Hand-carved Blocks with Watercolor: Winter Botanicals

Hand-colored linocut prints combine the dramatic presence of a linocut with the versatility and vibrant hues of watercolor painting. During the first session of class students will learn will the basics of carving and printing a linocut print by hand.  Students will carve into traditional battleship gray linoleum as well as the newer Gomuban carving substrate. An oil-based relief printing ink will be used to create the perfect resist for session two, when watercolor and colored pencil techniques will be utilized to brighten up the black and white prints. Students will leave with a set of varied and vibrantly-colored prints.

Girls’ Night Out: Custom Stamped Tea Towels

Bring your friends and spend a fun and relaxed evening with us making art and drinking wine! This month we will be creating custom stamped tea towels. Bring old friends, meet new ones and have a great night over a glass (or two!) of wine and a fun project designed for all skill levels. A fun and affordable girls night out!

Summer Intensive: Linocut Techniques

Tuesday – Thursday, August 21 – 23 / 10 am – 3 pm

Beginners and intermediate printmakers alike will enjoy this project-based approach to linoleum-cut printmaking. Learn several techniques for multicolor printing as well as how to carve simple, beautiful patterns and images into linoleum. We will print using Japanese hand printing techniques and on the etching press. Students will be able to work from their own images at their own pace. Katherine will cover strategies for working with key blocks and tint blocks, developing pattern and choosing images that lend themselves especially well to this process. Students will complete this class with a small edition of handcut prints. You’ll learn all about the tools, techniques and resources you need to be begin linoleum carving and printing at home.

Supply list: Pencil, any 5×7 black and white images (photocopies or laser prints) you may be interested in using for a print (some will also be provided), linoleum or wood carving tools if you have them. All other materials are included with your registration.

Image Transfers in Clay

Wednesdays, April 11 – 25 / 1 – 3 pm

Students will be introduced to image transfers techniques on clay. In this three-week series, students use hand building techniques to create 2-D or 3-D forms. Students will explore the use of slide decal image transfers, will explore clay silk screening techniques and the layering images. This is a fun and experimental course designed for students with some experience working with clay. All materials provided with registration.
