Tahoe: A Visual History – Learning to Look

Thursdays, September 17 – October 8 / 6 – 8 pm

Students will enjoy this four-week gallery and classroom based series on the art of learning to look while analyzing the exhibition Tahoe: A Visual History. Students will develop a visual literacy and will build on their visual language while examining historical and contemporary paintings and photography and three-dimensional artworks centered around the Lake Tahoe region. The first day of class will include admission to a very special lecture “Art Historian Alfred Harrison on Lake Tahoe’s Nineteenth-Century Artistic Heritage” followed by a class discussion.

The Artists’ Roundtable: Identifying Yourself as an Artist

Saturday, February 21 / 9 am – noon

Artists, art professionals and art enthusiasts are invited to join a roundtable discussion with like-minded individuals.  This professional development session is designed to help artists refine their artist statement, professional bio and resume, work towards developing a “brand” and learn how to shoot and prepare a digital portfolio with the intention of finding more professional opportunities.  Surface pattern designer and artist, Casey Sibley of Casey D. Sibley Art + Design, will facilitate a group dialogue featuring special guests Lisa Kurt, painter and illustrator behind Lisa Kurt Art + Illustration, Sarah Stevenson, a photographer and mixed media artist and the creator of the art retreat, Create. Explore. Discover, and Frances Melhop, Director of St. Mary’s Art Center and a photographer with ties to Milan, Italy, Europe, and the South Pacific, creating extraordinary and unique imagery in the fashion and advertising arena.

Radiant Mandalas: Meditative Drawing and Journaling

Students will explore the origins of the mandala (radiant) and the significance of these designs to various cultures. Experience the joy of learning the construction techniques that allow the inner self to manifest in a physical design filled with color and intricacy. Students will explore techniques to still their minds and bodies in order to relax and allow mandalas to flow onto paper and to then delve deeper in exploring journaling techniques. All necessary materials will be provided, but, if you have a journal or your own pens and colored pencils that you enjoy using, please bring them.

All necessary materials will be provided, but, if you have a journal or your own pens and colored pencils that you enjoy using, please bring them. Instructor will also discuss journaling with mandalas to draw even deeper benefits from the techniques.

Art of Meditation

Saturdays, January 10 – 31 / 10 – 11 am

Meditation is a technique for inner peace and wellness. Meditation can be a cornerstone of a healthy, happy, productive life. Everyone can do it. This class is taught by an expert who has over 30 years of experience helping people just like you. It does not require concentration or any special skill. You will learn different techniques each week that you can take home and use on your own. All are welcome, from first-timers to advanced students.
