Summer Intensive: Oil Painting Techniques

Monday – Friday, July 11 – 15 / 1 – 4 pm

Student new to oil or looking for a quick refresher will enjoy this introductory level course designed to teach basic oil painting techniques. Students will learn the properties of oil paint, application techniques, and color theory while recreating simple still life installations. Each class will focus on different painting techniques which will include a review of brushes and their function, blending techniques, color use and the grayscale and an introduction to textures.

Summer Intensive: Impressionist Landscapes

Monday – Friday, August 1 – 5 / 9 am – noon

Inspired by the exhibition “American Impressionism” students will use oil paint to explore color, light and shadow in the style of the Impressionists. This series will apply brushwork techniques while working from photo references of landscapes in the style of the Impressionists. *Supply list.

Summer Intensive: Contemporary Book of Hours

Tuesday – Thursday, June 14 – 16 / 9 am – 2 pm

Enjoy the process as we decorate and paint paper to be bound into a Middle Ages style book, with a soft leather wrap-around cover and exposed stitching. We will discuss medieval working methods and materials. Our  beautiful contemporary books of hours can be used as journals to contain words closest to our hearts.

  • bone folder
  • rulers (36-48″ long if you have one (we can share) plus a 12-18″ metal cork-backed ruler)
  • pencil & eraser
  • notebook (if you wish to take notes in class)
  • brushes (1″ and 3″ inexpensive hardware store variety–nude wooden handles and natural/pure bristles)
  • large watercolor or sumi brushes
  • 3 or 4 wooden chopsticks
  • 3 or 4 plastic spoons
  • 2 or 3 small jars or yogurt cups (with lids)
  • 1 or 2 larger containers with lids (such as 16 or 32 oz. cottage cheese or yogurt containers, or glass jars)
  • 1 roll of paper towels
  • 1 small bucket or another large yogurt container (at least 32 oz.–for water)
  • 60 sheets of scratch paper (8.5 x 11″ or larger, such as used computer or xerox paper)
  • 1 or 2 sponges
  • small spray bottle (optional)
  • rubber gloves (optional)
  • apron (and wear grubbies)
  • a few rubber or sponge stamps or other texturizing/patterning tools (optional–I’ll be bringing some to share)
  • triangle (12″ 30-60–I’ll bring some to share)

Learn the skills used in creating beautiful watercolor landscapes in this three-day summer intensive. Students will use photo reference and will explore the various qualities of watercolor. While this class is open to students of all levels, some watercolor experience is recommended. *Supply list.
