Box Making: The Clamshell Box

Not only for housing books, hand made boxes have a variety of functions. This course will teach the basics of decorative box construction. Using hard binders’ board and marbled paper, learn to construct a functional and decorative box with an elegant Clamshell closure. By mastering the basic template for these box models, students will gain the necessary skills for other varieties of boxes, while also enhancing their bookbinding skills. The instructor will bring many beautiful, one of a kind marbled fabrics and paper from which to choose to cover your unique box.

Beyond End Papers: Projects to Creatively Utilize Your Marbled Paper

Students who have taken a marbling class and have fallen in love, not only with the magical process of marbling, but also the gorgeous product they have created, often ask what they can do with their pieces.

This class will involve students in three different projects:

-Making a beautiful and durable gift bag

-Making a 4” round box

-Making a 4” square box


Students can bring their own marbled paper, or other special paper they would like to use, or use marbled paper provided by Pietro.

Introduction to Marbling Techniques

In this introductory class, student will gain a basic understanding of history, techniques, tools and styles of European marbling. Students will get hands on experience of all aspects of marbling from preparatory mixing of water medium and paints, to the creation of classical patterns. Specific attention will be given to learning how to obtain particular designs using a diverse array of rakes and combs. Students will have ample time for experimentation with guidance from the instructor.

All About Flowers in Oil

Explore still life oil painting in this workshop that looks specifically at painting a floral still life. Imploring the techniques and style of the Dutch Masters, both beginning, and more advanced oil painting students will enjoy learning how to set up a floral still life, will consider their composition and will learn how to take a floral still life painting from start to finish. Students will explore oil painting techniques, including brushwork, value and color. Students will work to develop their oil painting skills while exploring texture, light, shape and form.

Palette

  • Plexiglas or glass palette is the best for seeing your color and cleaning.  The simplest is to buy a cheap frame with glass, 12×16 or 16×20, and use the glass for your palette.

Palette Knife

  • Any size will be fine, short blade and a long pliable blade preferred.

Easel

  • Please bring you own easel setup if you prefer, otherwise easels are provided.  If you prefer to sit when you paint, a table top easel will be fine.  
  • Artwork Essentials – http://www.artworkessentials.com  – have several sizes of easels that are lightweight, easy to transport and very compact with tripod and accessories.  I will be using one at the workshop.

Paper Towels – Bounty (seem to be the best for not leaving residue on your brushes or painting).

Still Life Setups

  • You will be painting your own personal still life setup.  If you have any special vases, flowers, or items that you would like to possible put in your painting, please feel  free to bring them.  I will be bringing a lot of items for you to choose from also.  
  • Also bring a small & large box  and a dark colored cloth ( 2 yards minimum) preferably dark green, black or a neutral color.

NOTE: If you prefer not to buy extra supplies from this list, please just bring what you have.  I know art can get expensive.  I will be happy to share what I have with you and this will give an opportunity to try it before you buy.

Mosaics 101: Introduction to Mosaics

Students will learn the basics of mosaics, including techniques, design and grouting. Using various materials, students will work towards a 10” x 10” mosaic mirror or 6 x 12 plaque project. All materials provided but students may bring other objects (stones, jewels, beads, etc.) to incorporate into their piece. This class is intended for those unfamiliar or new to mosaics but all skill levels are welcome. At the end of the workshop, students will be given a grouting demo and take home grout kit. Students can take the grout home or may choose to complete the project with guidance at a later date at Copper Cat Studios in Sparks. Please plan to  bring a sack lunch. Please wear close toed shoes, as we will be cutting glass and it doesn’t feel good to get glass between your toes! Also if you are bringing a beverage (non-alcoholic please!), make sure it is in a covered container.

From Sheep to Yarn

This class will explore the origins of yarn. Taking raw wool freshly sheared from local sheep, students will wash it, card it, spin it into yarn and dye it. Students will finish the class with a custom skein of yarn that they have made from start to finish.

Making Paintbrushes with Natural Materials

Learn how to create your own paintbrushes using a variety of natural materials. Crafting your own paintbrushes allows you to create a wide range of textures and qualities with your brushstrokes. Students will create the handle from clay or bamboo shoots and experiment with textures created by an assortment of natural bristles.

Desert Sunsets in Watercolor

This class will focus on painting the vibrant colors of southwest sunsets in watercolor. Instruction will be given in creating deeply saturated colors by layering multiple washes. A combination of wet and dry brush painting will be used to create the stark contrasts of desert landscapes. Some watercolor experience is recommended.
