In-Person Educator Evening: April Bey – Atlantica, The Gilda Region
Take a journey to the imagined planet of Atlantica with Carmen Beals, Associate Curator, and Megan Bellister, Curator of Learning and Engagement, and explore themes of science fiction, colonialism, diversity and inclusion in the artwork of April Bey. Learn about Afrofuturist art and storytelling and how to integrate ideas about diversity, equity, and inclusion in your classroom.
In-Person Educator Evening: Narrative and Story through Art and Writing
Join Megan Bellister, Curator of Learning and Engagement, for an in-person discussion on integrating visual art into writing exercises, utilizing the exhibition Elisheva Biernoff: Reservoirs of Time. Elisheva Biernoff creates small-format paintings inspired by discarded photographs, reflecting on the anonymous traces of lives and places. Presentation followed by a wine reception.
Educator Evenings at the Nevada Museum of Art offer professional learning opportunities for teachers to connect the Museum’s collections and exhibitions with interdisciplinary art education, aligning with Nevada Academic Content Standards. Through interdisciplinary art education programming, Educator Evenings facilitate dialogue, collaboration among peers, and inspire innovative lesson plans. Registration is FREE. These offerings provide state-approved professional development hours for participation.

Redfield Curator of Learning and Engagement, for a presentation and discussion with educators about the exhibition Cannupa Hanksa Luger: Speechless and Nevada Academic Content Standards for social studies. Presentation followed by a wine reception.
In-Person Educator Evening: Using Portraiture to Explore History
Ben Aleck, is a lifelong artist, educator, and enrolled member of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe (Kooyooe Tukadu/cui-ui fish eaters). Born in Reno and raised on the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony (RSIC), Aleck’s paintings, illustrations, and prints give visual form to Indigenous stories. Join Curator of Learning and Engagement, Megan Bellister, as she explores how to use portraits by Aleck to deepen interdisciplinary connections between art and history.
Turning Pages Book Club: The Gilda Stories by Jewelle Gomez
Join Museum volunteer docents for a discussion of a book making connections to current exhibitions and artists featured at the Museum. The Gilda Stories is available to purchase in the Shop and participants should have completed the book prior to meeting. Register online for guiding questions that will be discussed at the book club. Back to School Night for Educators 2023
Nevada’s PreK-12 educators are invited to a special in-person back-to-school night. Enjoy access to the Museum’s exhibitions, a DJ, small bites and a bar. Participate in hands-on activities and a raffle.
Education providers will be present to share teaching resources, including Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows, Challenge Island Reno-Sparks, Desert Research Institute, Discovery Education, The Discovery, Doodles Academy, Envirolution, Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center, The Holland Project, Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful, Lahontan Audubon Society, Nevada Math, Nevada Museum of Art, Nevada State Museum, Reno Phil, Sierra Arts Foundation, Sierra Nevada Journeys, University of Nevada Reno Art Department, and Washoe Co. Library System.

Sunday Music Brunch at the Café is the perfect precursor to an afternoon exploring our galleries. Chef Colin Smith has updated the menu to include an eclectic array of options from traditional breakfast fare to lunch options–both of which pair nicely with juice, coffee, champagne or a mimosa. Enjoy live music by Colin Ross from 11:30 to 2:30. Doors open at 10:30 am and service continues until 2:30 pm. Reservations are required for parties of five or more, but encouraged for all as space is limited. Museum members receive 10% savings as a benefit of membership.
