The Folk & the Lore: Secret Lives

From the creative mind of Jessi LeMay comes the storytelling and narrative filmmaking project The Folk & the Lore. This multimedia project aims to collect, archive, and tell stories from Reno and throughout the region through photography, short films, and live storytelling events that will be held regularly at the Nevada Museum of Art. Together, we believe that when you know your neighbor’s story, not only do you feel more connected to your community, but those stories become part of your own. Join this event for an evening of storytelling and films centered around the theme of “Secret Lives.”

Doors open at 5 pm for social hour and chez louie cash bar. Stories begin at 6 pm.

H. Paul Moon on Equus Caballus and Cinematography of the West

Filmmaker H. Paul Moon discusses his film of Joel Nelson’s “Equus Caballus” currently on view in the exhibition “The Horse.” Join us for the debut screening of his newest short film “Mining the Mother Lode” recited by Andy Hedges, and a discussion about cinematography of the west ranging from equine to landscape.

Scott Schweigert on American Impressionism and The Lure of the Artists’ Colony

Curator of Art and Civilization at the Reading Public Museum, Scott Schweigert is the curator of the exhibition American Impressionism: The Lure of the Artists’ Colony and is a specialist in European art of the seventeenth century. Join Schweigert for a discussion on the emergence of artists’ colonies during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as it relates to the American Impressionists.  Learn more about the effect that these colonies had on artists’ creativity, including the ability to collaborate, teach, and experiment in their work.  American Impressionism: The Lure of the Artists’ Colony features a large collection of oil paintings and works on paper from the collection of the Reading Public Museum. American Impressionism: The Lure of the Artists’ Colony will be on view at the Nevada Museum of Art May 14 – August 14, 2016.

Curator of Mammalogy at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, Ross MacPhee is the co-curator of The Horse, and an expert in the archaeology and paleontology of horses. Join MacPhee for an exciting look into the long history of horses and their kin.

Maria Partridge: Painting Horses

Reno artist Maria Partridge’s horse paintings are well known in the region. Join Maria for an exploration of the ubiquitous animals inspiring her artwork.

Carol Nicholson’s Miracle

Horse enthusiast Carol Nicholson rescued a wild horse foal and nursed her back to health. The horse, named Miracle, is now the Bureau of Land Management’s “poster horse” success story highlighting the Bureau’s wild horse and burro programs.

Black Rock Design Institute Presents: Craig Steely

Taking the classic modernist tradition as a starting point, Craig Steely’s architecture is known for its crisp lines and clarity of vision. Celebrating the design process as a truly creative endeavor, Steely has explored unique sites across California and Hawaii, and has developed a singular architecture rooted to its context.
