Join us for a fun evening re-living the glory days of cassette tapes! We will be designing and making a musically inspired, accordion-fold book that will fit neatly into a cassette case. At the end of the evening, you will leave with you very own book-tape. All materials are provided, including drinks, but if you have any old cassettes you’d like to bring for inspiration, we encourage you to do so! A fun and affordable girls night out!

CANCELED: Learn about composition in painting and develop your watercolor skills while being inspired by the artwork of Georgia O’Keeffe. Students will begin the class by going into the galleries and looking at O’Keeffe’s Hawaiian flower inspired 1939 work Hibiscus with Plumeria. This class is ideal for beginners, or those wishing to refresh their skills.

That is, study the painting intently, look at how the artist handled the subject and manipulated the paint. Try to get inside the artist’s head and figure out why the artist emphasized one thing over another.  Then, paint a copy of it.  In doing so, you’ll potentially learn what it took for the artist to produce a particular work, what steps he may have followed, which parts were difficult and which were easier.  In the end, you’ll have a broader understanding and perhaps a technique or two you’ll be able to employ in your own future painting endeavors and, you’ll have your very own actual painting of a master work to hang on your wall and enjoy forever!

In this workshop, instructor Mike Callahan will take students inside the museum to study Childe Hassam’s painting “The South Ledges, Appledore” up close.  He’ll give a brief overview of the Hassam’s life and discuss the period in which he created this particular painting.  Then, the students will move into the classroom space where Mike will do a demonstration showing how he thinks the artist painted it as you, the student, follow along painting your own.  

By the end of the second day of this workshop, you will have painted your own painting that you can proudly display on your wall impressing both family and friends!

Create decorative and functional pottery in this six-week class designed for the beginner as well as those who have taken intermediate pottery classes in the past.  Students will learn how to work with clay in both hand building, and wheel-throwing techniques. Finishing methods such as decorating, stamping, painting, and staining will be introduced as well as the discussion and practice of firing and glazing of clay works. Stoneware clay will be used and cone 6 and cone 06 glazes will be available.  All firings will be done by the museum in an electric kiln. All materials are provided.

No matter if you shoot film or digital, mastering the camera’s exposure is key to great photography.This course will take photographers through the basics of the exposure triangle, and help eliminate any confusion on how to work with Shutter Speed, Aperture and ISO. Class will also cover how lenses play a role in not only composition, but also the exposure of the file. Other technical details like exposure theory, metering modes, and special shooting circumstances, like long exposure and bracketing, will be covered as well.

This is a great course for photographers to continue their education on exposure, or a great jumping off point for those just getting into photography, but are looking for something beyond a beginner course.

Saturdays, March 14 and 21

Ages: 15 and up / All levels

Required Supplies: Students are required to bring a DSLR camera, as well as their camera’s manual. A fully charged battery and memory card are also necessary for class. Any lenses that they own should also be brought to class.

Students will learn the basics of mosaics, including techniques, design and grouting. Using various materials, students will work towards a 10” x 10” mosaic mirror or 6 x 12 plaque project. All materials provided but students may bring other objects (stones, jewels, beads, etc.) to incorporate into their piece. This class is intended for those unfamiliar or new to mosaics but all skill levels are welcome. At the end of the workshop, students will be given a grouting demo and take home grout kit. Students can take the grout home or may choose to complete the project with guidance at a later date at Copper Cat Studios in Sparks. Please plan to  bring a sack lunch. Please wear close toed shoes, as we will be cutting glass and it doesn’t feel good to get glass between your toes! Also if you are bringing a beverage (non-alcoholic please!), make sure it is in a covered container.

CANCELED: Kids ages 7 – 12 will have fun exploring the tactile nature of clay.  Instruction will encompass basic hand building, throwing on the wheel, and sculpture.  In this 5 day camp, students will learn about the basics of pottery, glazing and the transformation of their pieces from the heat of kiln. This will be a fun and educational class.  All works will be fired in the Museums’ kiln. Snack and materials are included.
