Color Studies in Watercolor

Translucence is at the heart of watercolor painting. Learn to chart and mix your colors to keep the beautiful luminosity of the medium. This class includes color charting both wet and dry, mixing triads for unusual color, and learning to combine warm and cool hues. An excellent class for both the beginner and advanced student.

  • Your personal watercolor pallet. If you are a beginner please contact Carroll* for pallet suggestions. 
  • 2 sheets 11 x 15 140 lb cold pressed watercolor paper (Paper can be purchased from the instructor during class for $2 a sheet as we will use 2 or 3 sheets). 
  • Roll of paper towels 
  • Drawing pencil 
  • Kneaded eraser 
  • 2 Plastic water containers 
  • #6 or #8 round brush (Silver/Black Velvet brush recommended – available at Nevada Fine Arts)

Botanical Illustration: Winter Gourds

Learn the techniques of botanical illustration to capture the bounty of winter gourds in watercolor.  Students with watercolor experience and those new to watercolor are welcome.

Saturday, January 11

– Basic watercolor set that includes yellows, sap green and reds (Beginner’s Reeves or Richardson Set is fine)
– Small round 10-well pallet
– No 6 or No 8 pointed/round watercolor brush
– Graphite or mechanical pencil
– Rubber eraser
– 2 plastic water containers
– Roll of paper towels
– Tablet of cold press 140 lb watercolor paper (2 sheets will be used in class). Students may opt to purchase single sheets of watercolor paper from the instructor for $2/sheet

Hand Painted Folk Hearts

Inspired by her Czechoslovakian heritage, instructor Iva Neveux will introduce students to basic painting techniques to create beautiful hand painted hearts. Each student will create two hand-painted hearts using combinations of dots, lines, dashes and curves. Make one for yourself and one to give to someone you love. All materials included with registration.

Drawing Techniques: Line and Composition

Students will enjoy this introductory level course designed to teach basic drawing techniques while focusing on line work, value scales and composition. This class is designed to provide a foundation for drawing, teaching students how to realistically draw objects within an environment. Each class will focus on different drawing techniques and strategies, beginning with value scale exercises and moving towards rendering and shading three dimensional objects in an engaging composition.

Drawing Techniques: Shape and Form

Students will enjoy this course designed to emphasize observational drawing to understand shape and form. In this course, students will improve their observational drawing techniques by first working on rendering shapes within the still life. Later on, students will work towards creating dynamic compositions while diving deep into rendering complex shapes, forms and textures. This class is designed to provide a strong introductory foundation for beginning drawing students and a refresher for more advanced students.

– Medium and Support Items:
– Vine charcoal, thin and fat pieces
– Choice of conte crayon, 6B graphite pencil or sticks, china marker, compressed charcoal, carbon pencils, or any suitable medium for drawing on newsprint
– Large kneaded eraser
– Pink pearl eraser
– Portable pencil sharpener or utility knife (best for soft/medium pencils)
– Clean small rags
– Sandpaper pad for sharpening drawing mediums
