Improve your life drawing skills and explore a variety of media while working freely from a nude model in this popular open studio class. The instructor will be present to coordinate class and offer instruction upon request. Both male and female models will be posed and drawn.

The Art of Meditation

Meditation is a technique for inner peace and wellness. Meditation can be a cornerstone of a healthy, happy, productive life. Everyone can do it. This class is taught by an expert who has over 30 years of experience helping people just like you. It does not require concentration or any special skill. You will learn different techniques each week that you can take home and use on your own. All are welcome, from first-timers to advanced students.

Painting Techniques: The Still Life in Oil

Employing the techniques and style of the Dutch Masters, both beginning and more advanced oil painting students will enjoy learning how to set up a still life, develop a concept and composition and will learn how to take a still life painting from start to finish.  Students will explore oil painting techniques, including brushwork, value and color. Referencing the work of Vermeer and  Rembrandt students will work to develop skilled painting of textures and surfaces while exploring use of light, shape and form.

Palette

Plexiglas or glass palette is the best for seeing your color and cleaning.  The simplest is to buy a cheap frame with glass, 12×16 or 16×20, and use the glass for your palette.

Any size will be fine, short blade and a long pliable blade preferred.

Easel

Please bring you own easel setup or easels are available.   If you prefer to sit when you paint, a table top easel will be fine.

Artwork Essentials – http://www.artworkessentials.com  – have several sizes of easels that are lightweight, easy to transport and very compact with tripod and accessories.  I will be using one at the workshop.

Paper Towels – Bounty (seem to be the best for not leaving residue on your brushes or painting).

If you prefer not to buy extra supplies from this list, please just bring what you have.  I know art can get expensive.  I will be happy to share what I have with you and this will give an opportunity to try it before you buy.

Still Life Setups

You will be painting your own personal still life setup.  If you have any special vases, flowers, fruit, vegetable or items that you would like to possible put in your painting, please feel free to bring them.  I will be bringing a lot of items for you to choose from also. Also bring a small & large box (flatl) and a dark colored cloth (2 yards minimum) preferably dark green, black or a neutral color.

Growing Artist Series: Art Adventures for 2 – 6 years

The Growing Artist Series is designed for young artists ages 2 – 6 and their parents. On the third Saturday of each month, children will be encouraged to create art alongside their adult. Each month offers an exploration of different art mediums and basic art skills, introducing little ones to the building blocks of art that will provide a solid foundation for future art lovers and artists.  This unique creative experience places an emphasis on having fun while exploring. This class is an open studio “drop-in” format to accommodate short attention spans, but registration is required.

Digital Design for Leatherwork

Students will learn how to use iPads programs to create their own digital designs with the goal of making a simple hand stitched book cover out of leather. The finished book cover will display their original design. This class is great for those with leather or scrapbooking interest who want to learn how to create their own vector designs to use with laser or paper cutters (Cricut, ect.).

Ceramic Workshop: Intro to Underglazes

Learn the basics of under glazing, color theory, and mixing glazes. Explore underglazes mixing together your own colors. Design and glaze your own tiles and a planter or vase. Underglazes mix and apply more like a traditional paint able to be mixed and layered which makes under glazing not only a great skill to understand for any potter but a more approachable style of glazing for anyone new to pottery. Under glazed pottery will be given a clear coat and a mid-firing to make it completely functional.

Ceramic Workshop: Intro to Scraffito

Learn the basics of scraffito practicing on pre-made green wear tiles and a vase or planter. Students will learn the basics of additive and subtractive scraffito practice use of negative and positive space and have a beautiful functional vase/planter. All pieces will be fired and given a clear coat of glaze ready to be picked up two weeks after class.

Mosaics 101: Introduction to Mosaics

Students will learn the basics of mosaics, including techniques, design and grouting. Using various materials, students will work towards a 10” x 10” mosaic mirror or 6 x 12 plaque project. All materials provided but students may bring other objects (stones, jewels, beads, etc.) to incorporate into their piece. This class is intended for those unfamiliar or new to mosaics but all skill levels are welcome. At the end of the workshop, students will be given a grouting demo and take home grout kit. Students can take the grout home or may choose to complete the project with guidance at a later date at Copper Cat Studios in Sparks. Please plan to  bring a sack lunch. Please wear close toed shoes, as we will be cutting glass and it doesn’t feel good to get glass between your toes! Also if you are bringing a beverage (non-alcoholic please!), make sure it is in a covered container.
