Summer Camp: Digital Art and Animation

Kids ages 8 – 12 will have fun playing on the Museum’s iPad Pros as they work on story-boarding, character design and animation in this week long summer camp. Students will also have an opportunity to explore and sketch using the iPads in the Museum’s galleries while looking for inspiration for their own work. A snack and all materials are included with registration.

Ceramics: Open Studio

Intermediate and advanced level students will enjoy developing their hand building and/or wheel throwing techniques in this open studio ceramics class. Instructor will introduce students to new techniques, will encourage experimentation and will assist students with independent challenges.  Studio clay and glazes are provided.

Natural Illustration: Feathers in Watercolor

In this intermediate to advanced level class, students will learn the basics of natural illustration drawing with a focus on feathers and watercolor. Students will learn about feather composition, creating a three-series drawing of three chosen feathers. Some feather specimens will be provided to draw from life along with photo reference materials. *Basic understanding of watercolor is advised.

Upcycled Travel Journal with Exposed Long Stitch Spine

Students will learn to make a hand stitched travel journal out of manila folders, reclaimed paper and discarded book covers. The finished journal will contain all the pages needed to document your next adventure, and enough pockets to store the treasures you collect along the way. By the end of the class, students will have gained the skills needed to turn any old or vintage book into a functional journal. Beginning and Intermediate students welcome.

Upcycled Lunch Sack Journal

The lunch sack becomes a clever journal in this new class. Students will learn the steps for transforming paper bags into a pocket-filled journal that makes a great travel notebook, nature journal, garden journal, art journal, or scrapbook. Discover how the unique structure of a paper bag can be used to create interesting layers in your journal with main pages, mini pages, and storage pockets for stashing special finds. The unique and flexible binding taught in this class can also be used to turn any collection of individual folded pages into a book. Beginner and intermediate students welcomed, including children over the age of 12.

Folded Book Structure with Removable Collaged Cards

Create a beautiful set of collaged cards, as well as a folded book to hold them, in this two-for-one class. Students will not only turn ordinary playing cards into mini-collages with beautiful backgrounds and layers; but they’ll also create a small book to hold the finished cards. Instruction will include the steps for producing one of book artist Hedi Kyle’s renowned folded books—no glue or stitching required! Beginning and intermediate students welcome.

Bristlecone Pine in Ink and Watercolor

Bristlecones are a wonderful subject for both realistic and impressionistic watercolors. Using paint and ink, students will learn to capture the essence of these wonders of the natural world.  Some watercolor experience is recommended.

Learn to carve simple, beautiful patterns or images in linoleum and print them using Japanese hand printing techniques. The images of birds we’ll be working with in this class lend themselves especially well to this versatile printmaking process. Found images can be transformed into vibrantly layered compositions using Katherine’s easy transfer and carving techniques. Everyone will leave with a small edition of prints of birds. You’ll learn all about the tools, techniques and resources you need to be begin linoleum carving and printing at home.
