Poppies in Watercolor

Saturday, May 12 / 10 am – 2 pm

Learn to paint the vibrancy of poppies from live specimens and photos.  Demonstrations will focus on layering washes to capture deep saturation of color while maintaining the transparency of watercolor.

Watercolor: Open Studio

Thursdays, May 10 – 31 / 9 am – 12 pm

This intermediate level open studio class is designed for returning students and experienced students. Students should have a personal work in progress to work towards completing in this fun and social series. Each class will begin with a short lesson addressing a challenge or technique followed by open studio time to continue work on personal projects. Instructor will be on hand to assist with challenges, offer critique, instruction, and encouragement. 

Supply list: Please bring any supplies you own for your specific project. A recommended basic supply list is as follows: 
• Watercolors: Cobalt Blue, Phthalo Blue, Lemon Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Magenta, Sap Green, New Gamboge, Yellow Ochre. (Cotman or Van Gogh is fine; Windsor Newton is excellent)
• Your personal watercolor pallet
• 2 HB Pencils
• Watercolor Brushes: #6 & #10 Round (Silver/Black brand is recommended and available at Nevada Fine Arts)
• Pad of Arches 140# cold press watercolor paper
• Roll of paper towels
• 2 Plastic water containers.

Painting Clinic: Portrait Anatomy

Sunday, January 28 / 10 am – 12:30 pm

Painting clinics are designed to offer specific instruction on a variety of techniques and painting challenges. This series is ideal for Painting: Open Studio students looking for additional instruction and help with specific topics. 

Join us this month as we take a close look at the anatomy of a portrait. Students will learn proper measurements of the face from front, side and three-quarter view. Students will also review the structure of the eyes, nose, mouth and ears. Depending on your preference, bring your paint, charcoal or pencil and get ready for some fun exercises to improve your skills!

Introduction to Video Editing with Premiere Pro

Saturdays, April 28 – May 5 / 10 am – 2 pm

Students looking to learn basic video editing will enjoy this introduction to Adobe’s Premiere Pro video editing software. Learn basic editing skills, explore the Premiere Pro panels, learn how to add graphics and text, adjust audio levels and prepare final videos for sharing.

Supply list: A laptop with with Adobe Premiere Pro installed. We will be working with version CC. At least 20 gigabytes of free hardrive space is advised.

Pyrography Basics: Calabaza Spirit Pouches

Saturday, April 28 / 10 am – 4 pm

Inspired by her Navajo heritage, instructor Tia Flores, will use natural resources and designs inspired by nature in this one-day calabaza (gourd) pyrography workshop. Students will learn and apply basic pyrographic (burning) techniques to apply designs onto the surface of a small calabaza (gourd).  Students will complete their necklace by adding a leather backing to the gourd and will complete the project by adding artificial sinew stitching and leather strap. All materials provided with registration.

Introduction to Pyrography Techniques: Wood Burning on Panels

Saturday, March 10 / 9 am – 4 pm

Pyrography means “writing with fire” and is the traditional art of using a heated tip to burn designs onto natural materials, such as wood, leather, or gourds. In this workshop, students will be introduced to the various types of wood burning techniques, tools and nibs and will learn how to transfer designs/drawings onto a two-dimensional surface. Students will work on line quality, value, contrast and shading while using wood burning tools. Students will then learn how to apply fur and feather textures as they work towards the completion of an 8 x 10” panel using a design provided by the instructor. All materials provided with registration.

Hand Painted Folk Hearts

Saturday, February 3 / 9 am – 12 pm

Inspired by her Czechoslovakian heritage, instructor Iva Neveux will introduce students to basic painting techniques to create beautiful hand painted hearts. Each student will create two hand-painted hearts using combinations of dots, lines, dashes and curves. Make one for yourself and one to give to someone you love.

Students will enjoy a mimosa and a sweet bite while they work in this fun Saturday morning workshop. All materials included with registration.
