Art Break for Kids

Friday, January 5 / 9 am – 2 pm

Kids ages 7 – 12 will have fun exploring a variety of art mediums in this fun and interactive one-day workshop. Students will get their hands dirty in the classroom early in the morning and then and will practice their drawing skills while exploring the Museum’s galleries.  A mid-morning snack and all materials are included with registration.

*Students need to bring a cold-lunch and bottle of water.

Miniature Pine Needle Baskets

Saturday, November 11 / 10 am – 2 pm

Create a miniature pine needle basket using natural materials. Learn from the basket making tradition of Audrey Frank’s native Nevadan Washoe/Paiute culture. Explore weaving methods by combining pine needles, sinew and raffia in this one-day workshop.

Color Studies in Watercolor

Tuesday, April 10 / 10 am – 2 pm

Translucence is at the heart of watercolor painting. Learn to chart and mix your colors to keep the beautiful luminosity of the medium. This class includes color charting both wet and dry, mixing triads for unusual color, and learning to combine warm and cool hues. An excellent class for both the beginner and advanced student.

  • Your personal watercolor pallet. If you are a beginner please contact Carroll* for pallet suggestions. 
  • 2 sheets 11 x 15 140 lb cold pressed watercolor paper (Paper can be purchased from the instructor during class for $2 a sheet as we will use 2 or 3 sheets). 
  • Roll of paper towels 
  • Drawing pencil 
  • Kneaded eraser 
  • 2 Plastic water containers 
  • #6 or #8 round brush (Silver/Black Velvet brush recommended – available at Nevada Fine Arts)

Bouquets in Ink and Watercolor

Thursdays, April 5 and 12 / 10 am – 2 pm

Learn to combine the texturing of ink and the vibrancy of watercolor to capture the beauty of of a floral bouquet. This class is designed to teach basic approaches to botanical illustration. Students will use photographs and live specimens for reference. Beginners and experienced students are welcome.

Supply list:
Watercolor Paint, Paper (140 lb cold press) and Pallet.
Additional required supplies:
No 8 or No 6 pointed watercolor brush
Micron black ink pens 005 and 01
HB pencil and eraser
Two water containers
Roll of paper towels

Watercolor for Beginners

Sundays, February 25 – March 18 / 10 am – 2 pm

Learn the skills used in creating beautiful paintings using translucent watercolors.Beginners will learn the basics of pallet set up, color mixing and a range of watercolor techniques including washes, dry brush work and “special effects.”

Supply List:

  • Watercolors: Cobalt Blue, Phthalo Blue, Lemon Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Magenta, Sap Green, New Gamboge, Yellow Ochre. (Cotman or Van Gogh is fine; Windsor Newton is excellent)
  • Plastic studio pallet with at least 10 paint wells
  • 2 HB Pencils
  • Watercolor Brushes: #6 & #10 Round (Silver/Black brand is recommended and available at Nevada Fine Arts)
  • Pad of Arches 140# cold press watercolor paper. (Single pieces can be purchased from the instructor during class for $2 each).  We will use approximately four sheets.
  • Roll of paper towels
  • 2 Plastic water containers.
  • Additional watercolor supplies (paints, brushes, etc) are welcome but not necessary.

Watercolor: Open Studio

Wednesdays, February 21 – March 14 / 1 – 4 pm

This intermediate level open studio class is designed for returning students and experienced students. Students should have a personal work in progress to work towards completing in this fun and social series. Each class will begin with a short lesson addressing a challenge or technique followed by open studio time to continue work on personal projects. Instructor will be on hand to assist with challenges, offer critique, instruction, and encouragement.

Supply list: Please bring any supplies you own for your specific project. A recommended basic supply list is as follows:

Introduction to Watercolors

This class is designed for anyone who would like to explore the medium of watercolor without the commitment.  Learn techniques such as washes, glazing, wet on wet and much more.  Find out if watercolor is for you.  The class is great for beginners who would like to experiment with watercolor techniques in an instructive setting. No experience necessary. All materials included with registration.

Butterflies and Moths in Ink and Watercolor

Tuesdays, January 9 and 16 / 10 am – 2 pm

Learn to combine the texturing of ink and the vibrancy of watercolor to create illustrations while focusing on moths and butterflies. Explore the tradition of scientific illustration while referencing specimens and photographs in this two-day workshop. No experience necessary.

Supply List:

  • Tablet of 140# Watercolor paper (Casson, Arches, or Strathmore). NOTE: Paper can be purchased from instructor during class for $2 per sheet.
  • Small round 10 well pallet with plastic lid
  • Sketch tablet or paper
  • Basic watercolor set (Reeves or Richardson set of 12 is fine, or your own set)
  • 2 drawing or mechanical pencils, and a rubber eraser
  • Fine point (005) black ink pen, MUST be waterproof
  • Two plastic water containers
  • Roll of paper towels
