Book Arts: Uncial Calligraphy

Tuesdays, September 5 – 26 / 6 – 9 pm

Uncial is a strong, clear, and beautiful calligraphic hand which dates from Greece in the 2nd century. It became the most important book-script of the late Roman era, and came to its flowering in the 5th century. We will look at historical forms, and letter our own contemporary version of these sturdy, round majuscules.

Supply list:

  •  Notebook (if you wish to take notes)
  • 3mm Brause nib
  • Nib holder
  • Higgins Eternal ink
  • Strathmore 300 series sketch paper, tape top pad is preferable) Ink dishes (bottle cap on a saucer would work ok) Baby wipes, apron, rag, and chair cushion if you want

Botanical Illustration: Winter Gourds

Wednesday, December 6 / 10 am – 3 pm

Learn the techniques of botanical illustration to capture the bounty of winter gourds in watercolor.  Students with watercolor experience and those new to watercolor are welcome.

Supply List:

– Basic watercolor set that includes yellows, sap green and reds (Beginner’s Reeves or Richardson Set is fine)
– Small round 10-well pallet
– No 6 or No 8 pointed/round watercolor brush

– Rubber eraser
– 2 plastic water containers
– Roll of paper towels
– Tablet of cold press 140 lb watercolor paper (2 sheets will be used in class). Students may opt to purchase single
sheets of watercolor paper from the instructor for $2/sheet

Color Studies in Watercolor

Sunday, December 3 / 10 am – 2 pm

Translucence is at the heart of watercolor painting. Learn to chart and mix your colors to keep the beautiful luminosity of the medium. This class includes color charting both wet and dry, mixing triads for unusual color, and learning to combine warm and cool hues. An excellent class for both the beginner and advanced student.

  • Your personal watercolor pallet. If you are a beginner please contact Carroll* for pallet suggestions. 
  • 2 sheets 11 x 15 140 lb cold pressed watercolor paper (Paper can be purchased from the instructor during class for $2 a sheet as we will use 2 or 3 sheets). 
  • Roll of paper towels 
  • Drawing pencil 
  • Kneaded eraser 
  • 2 Plastic water containers 
  • #6 or #8 round brush (Silver/Black Velvet brush recommended – available at Nevada Fine Arts)

Landscapes in Watercolor

Tuesdays, November 7 – 28 / 10 am – 2 pm

Learn the skills used in creating beautiful watercolor landscapes in this three-week series. Students will use photo reference and will explore the various qualities of watercolor. While this class is open to students of all levels, some watercolor experience is recommended.

Supply list: 

  • Watercolor Kit to include the following colors: Cobalt Blue, Phthalo Blue, Lemon Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Magenta, Sap Green, New Gamboge, Yellow Ochre. (Cotman or Van Gogh is fine; Windsor Newton is excellent)
  • Plastic studio pallet with at least 10 paint wells.
  • 2 HB Pencils
  • Watercolor Brushes:  #6 & #10 Round (Silver/Black brand is recommended and available at Nevada Fine Arts)  and 1/2″ or 1″ flat brush
  • Pad of Arches 140# cold press watercolor paper. (Single pieces can be purchased from the instructor during class for $2 each)
  • Roll of paper towels

Watercolor: Open Studio

Thursdays, October 12 – November 9 / 1 – 4 pm

Beginning and experienced students will enjoy this five-week open studio format watercolor series. Students are invited to bring works in progress or begin new projects in this fun and social series. Each class will begin with a short lesson addressing a challenge or technique followed by open studio time to continue work on personal projects. Instructor will be on hand to assist with challenges, offer critique, instruction and encouragement.

Supply List: Please bring any supplies you own for your specific project. A recommended basic supply list is as follows:

Learn the skills used in creating beautiful paintings using translucent watercolors.Beginners will learn the basics of pallet set up, color mixing and a range of watercolor techniques including washes, dry brush work and “special effects.”

Kids’ Corner: Mythological Creatures

Wednesdays, August  23 – September 27 / 3:30 – 5:30 pm

Centaurs, mermaids, and dragons will inspire young artists as they explore a variety of art materials in this fun six-week after school series. Students will learn and improve on basic illustration, printing and book-making techniques. All materials and a snack are included with registration.
