Visiting Artist Workshop: Lordy Rodriguez

Join visiting artist, Lordy Rodriguez, in a workshop exploring contemporary drawing and collage techniques using pen, marker and patterned papers. Lordy Rodriguez’s work is featured in the exhibition Tahoe: A Visual History and is part of the Museum’s permanent collection.

Mad Cap Map Book

Tuesdays, October 20 – November 10 / 6 – 9 pm

Maps can be finely-tuned accurate plottings of terrain or they can be loosely sketched, fanciful chartings from our imaginations. You will be encouraged to design a map or site of your choosing in whatever style you desire, so long as it’s on paper. Monoline calligraphic capital letters will be demonstrated and practiced. They will be used to label locations, thoughts, and memories. The map will be made into a book: a fun, enjoyable journal to record past experiences or future adventures.

Required Supplies: Bone folder, watercolor brushes, drafting tape, pencil & eraser, fine and extra fine black Sharpie markers, silver and/or gold markers, metal cork-backed ruler (18”), rags, apron, x-acto knife, maps of a place you’d like to go to, or maps & mementos from a place you’ve been to and loved. 

The Art of Meditation

Saturdays, October 24 – November 14 / 10 – 11 am

Meditation is a technique for inner peace and wellness. Meditation can be a cornerstone of a healthy, happy, productive life. Everyone can do it. This class is taught by an expert who has over 30 years of experience helping people just like you. It does not require concentration or any special skill. You will learn different techniques each week that you can take home and use on your own. All are welcome, from first-timers to advanced students.

Burden Basket Weaving with Sue Coleman

Saturday and Sunday, November 7 and 8 / 10 am – 4 pm

Join Sue Coleman, one of Nevada’s preeminent Washoe basket weavers, in a two-day workshop exploring the tradition and techniques of Washoe basket weaving. Students will work with dyed and natural reed to create a conically shaped burden basket. DSLR Camera Basics

Saturdays, August 22 – 29 / 10 am – 2 pm

This class is designed for beginning to intermediate photographers who have purchased a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera, which is a camera with removable lenses. Course participants will explore the specific features of DSLR cameras, as well as general photographic skills and techniques to make great pictures.

Required Supplies: Students are required to bring have a DSLR camera, as well as their camera’s manual. A fully charged battery and memory card are also necessary for class. Any lenses that they own should also be brought to class.

Art High: Sketching the Figure

Saturdays, September 12 – October 17 / 9:30 am – noon

Teens ages 13 – 18 will enjoy exploring basic figure sketching techniques through line, value, shape and composition. The first class will explore basic drawing techniques while working from a mannequin, the remaining classes will include drawing sessions with a live posed model dressed in swim or athletic attire.

Required Supplies: Students to supply a 18 x 24 Newsprint Pad. A variety of drawing materials will be provided.

Life Drawing: Open Studio

Thursdays, October 1 – 22 / 1 – 4 pm

Improve your life drawing skills and explore a variety of media while working freely from a nude model in this popular open studio class. The instructor will be present to coordinate class and offer instruction upon request. Both male and female models will be posed and drawn.

The following are suggested basic supplies – all media are welcome, so please bring whatever supplies you need for whichever media you are using.

– Medium and Support Items:

– Vine charcoal, thin and fat pieces

– Choice of conte crayon, 6B graphite pencil or sticks, china marker, compressed charcoal, carbon pencils, or any suitable medium for drawing on newsprint

– Large kneaded eraser

– Pink pearl eraser

– Portable pencil sharpener or utility knife (best for soft/medium pencils)

– Clean small rags

– Sandpaper pad for sharpening drawing mediums

Kids’ Corner: Fun with Watercolor

Saturdays, September 19 – October 3 / 10:30 am – 12 pm

Young artists, ages 7 – 12, will explore basic watercolor techniques to create beautiful artworks. Drawing from the Museum’s exhibitions, students will explore the galleries to draw inspiration for their final artworks in this fun afterschool three-week series. All materials and a snack are included with registration.
