Ceramics: Open Studio

Intermediate and advanced level students will enjoy developing their hand building and/or wheel throwing techniques in this open studio ceramics class. Instructor will introduce students to new techniques, will encourage experimentation and will assist students as needed.

Drawing for Oil Painting

The key element of a great oil painting is a solid drawing undergirding it. While a great drawing can stand alone without needing to be painted, a great painting can’t be so without a great drawing/underpainting to start. In this class, students will learn a simple approach to drawing semi-complex to complex subjects with paint into an underpainting. Under the guidence of the instructor, students will turn turn thir underpainting into a finshed piece! Students will likely be able to complete two projects over the course of the class.

Mastering the Elements of the Landscape – How to Paint Nocturnes

Painting a nocturne, or night scene can be a challenging endeavor since the artist is attempting to portray something that is devoid of light. As such, the artist must use license to make the mostly unseeable seen.  In this class, students will learn a technique to create a nocturne using a well-lit reference changing day to night. Students who have taken the Landscape Basics class will benefit, but it is not a prerequisite. Students will be able to apply the techniques learned in this course to future nocturne paintings.

Introduction to Western Paper Marbling

This popular marbling workshop will introduce students marbling techniques on fabric that can be used for covering books and boxes. Students will begin the day by working on basic marbling skills. With the instructor’s guidance, they will work on new patterns with an eye for nuance. The main focus will be on marbling fabric to create book cloth, and techniques for other textile uses will also be discussed. At the end of the day, the instructor will demonstrate how to prepare pieces of marbled cloth for use in bookbinding. Students will leave with their own stack of 15 marbled fabric pieces. All materials provided with registration.

Textile Marbling on Scarves

Witness this magical process that transfers the paint from the surface of the water to a silk scarf. In this one-day workshop, Pietro will show students how to print on silk scarves using an array of different patterns and colors that you can choose from.  After some guided practice with some of your favorite colors, students will have the opportunity to paint 2 beautiful scarves.

Drawing I: Fundamentals

This is an introductory drawing class with an emphasis on the fundamentals of how to draw what you see, and how to make things look 3-dimensional by modeling form with light and shadow. Focus will be primarily on creating original compositions of still life’s in developing these skills with the final class session including how to apply these techniques to drawing the figure.

Introduction to Glass Art: Torch Working and Beadmaking

Create beads and more in this hands-on introductory glass art course. Students will explore the amazing world of lampworking by utilizing clear and colored glass rods, along with various tools and techniques. Learn more about the process of melting, shaping, and forming the glass…then annealing your finished pieces. Additionally, students will learn about the science, history, technology, and culture of this unique medium.

Students will focus on:

1. Safety and material practices are covered and emphasized throughout this course.

2. Turning torches on and operating equipment, tools, and flame techniques. 

3. Participants will learn how to create bead forms while exploring various techniques, applications, and styles. 

4. Students will have open studio time to create their own work after learning the basics.

Introduction to Sewing: Mastering the Basics

In this 4 week course students will learn to master the basics of sewing and complete your very own pillow cover from a design and fabric of your choosing. If you’re a beginner ir someone who needs a refresher, this class is for you!  Students will learn basic sewing machine mechanics and accessories, sewing machine control and coordination (sewing in lines, curves and corners), basic hand sewing and stitches, fabric and notion selection, proper cutting techniques, and how to start designing and executing  your own sewing projects. 

Note: The Museum School has Singer Brilliance 6180 brand sewing machines, tools and fabric for students to use but please feel free to bring your own machine and supplies if you’d like.
