Ceramics: Open Studio

Intermediate and advanced level students will enjoy developing their hand building and/or wheel throwing techniques in this open studio ceramics class. Instructor will introduce students to new techniques, will encourage experimentation and will assist students as needed.

Outdoor Drawing and Painting Intensive

Improve your drawing skills and explore a variety of media in this fun and encouraging on location class. The instructor will be present to coordinate and offer individualized instruction upon request. Weekly demonstrations will encourage individuals to work through drawing challenges and explore their media of choice in this open format class. Students will focus on drawing buildings in perspective, drawing water, drawing plants and foliage as well as drawing people in motion. Students will work primarily on location at nearby Idlewild Park. The first day students will meet in front of the California Building located within Idlewild park at the Rose Garden. (75 Cowan Dr.)

Suggested Supplies: The following are suggested basic supplies – all media are welcome, so please bring whatever supplies you need for whichever media you are using.

  • Drawing board – 20”x 26” or larger (light-weight masonite works best)
  • Newsprint pad – 18”x 24” – rough surface recommended
  • Bull dog clamps or similar to attach pad to board
  • Vine charcoal, thin and fat pieces
  • Choice of conte crayon, 6B graphite pencil or sticks, china marker, compressed charcoal, carbon pencils, or any suitable medium for drawing on newsprint
  • Large kneaded eraser
  • Pink pearl eraser
  • Portable pencil sharpener or utility knife (best for soft/medium pencils)
  • Optional: portable easel

iPhone Photography: Macro

This class will go over the fundamentals of macro photography, lighting and an editing workflow specific to the iPhone software, as well as printing 1-2 4×6 images directly from your phone. Although this class is based around the iPhone software other smartphones are welcomed as the fundamentals of photography will still apply.

Introduction to Glass Art: Kiln Forming

Students will explore the amazing world of kiln-formed glass art by utilizing clear and colored flat glass and recycled art glass into molds along with various tools and techniques. Students will also slump glass bottles to create unique spoon rests, charcuterie boards and more! Learn more about the process of designing, cutting, melting, and kiln-forming the glass…then annealing your finished pieces. Additionally, students will learn about the science, history, technology, and culture of this unique medium. All supplies are provided.
