Students will enjoy developing their painting techniques and skills in this observational open studio class.  Weekly subject matter will rotate between nude and clothed models and still-lifes. Each class will begin with brief instruction followed by an open studio format painting class. Students may use acrylic or oil paint. Dry media is also welcome.

Working in oil or acrylic paint, students will explore value divisions in landscapes and the basics of brush sketching and massing. With these skills students will learn how to relate color to value and will gain a better understanding of identifying spatial cues in a landscape. Using foundational skills students can then explore under-painting, glazing and dry-brushing techniques.

Kids ages 7– 12 will have fun playing on the Museum’s iPad Pros as they work on story-boarding, character design and animation in this after school series. Students will also have an opportunity to explore and sketch using the iPads in the Museum’s galleries while looking for inspiration for their own work. Teens 12 – 15 will learn the basics and versatility of procreate to produce their digital painting through form, color and line. Using a photo reference, the instructor will breakdown the steps to convert a photograph to a digital work of art.

Collaging is the art of sticking various different materials such as photographs, pieces of paper or fabric on to a backing. In this class, students will learn about the aesthetics of collage, melding the ideas of reality and fiction as the instructor guides them through the process of creating their own piece using everyday materials. 

Most of the supplies are provided, but feel free to bring any materials you’d like to incorporate into your collage piece.

This Introductory drawing course is designed to develop various approaches to drawing through active exploration, observation, and self-expression. The classroom exercises will emphasoze on the development of observational skills and eye-hand coordination as well as methods and techniques to represent the illusion of the three-dimensional world on a two-dimensional surface. they also provide experimentation with many drawing materials. Demonstrations will provide students the opportunity to understand various drawing practices and theories, in addition to exposing them to historical and contemporary examples.

Join this class to learn how to paint a variety of skies in watercolor. Using mostly wet in wet approach, we will focus on several different types of skies, including multiple variations on clouds, stormy/rainy sky, early morning calm sky and sunsets. 100% cotton paper is highly recommended for wet in wet approach.
