Nevada Humanities presents the Nevada Humanities Literary Crawl Keynote Event, featuring keynote speaker, Gabby Rivera. Rivera believes that the tools writers use to build a better story are the same tools we can use to improve our most vulnerable communities: good dialogue, and radical creativity. Come listen to the author of Juliet Takes a Breath and Marvel Comics’ AMERICA as she presents “Inspiring Radical Creativity.” There will be a question and answer session following the presentation, hosted by Felicia Perez. A book signing will follow the program. Gabby Rivera is the keynote speaker for the fifth annual Nevada Humanities Literary Crawl, which takes place on Saturday, September 15, throughout the California Avenue corridor. Andrea Pappas is Associate Professor in Art History at Santa Clara University, where she is also Chair of the Department of Art and Art History. She earned her PhD from the University of Southern California, where she wrote her dissertation Mark Rothko’s early works. Join Pappas as she explores the significance of Rothko’s work in the context of our feature exhibition, Manet to Maya Lin.

Best known for their “mid-century modern” furniture designs, Charles and Ray Eames epitomized the modern era. Their hands-on, learning-by-doing process explored the possibilities of materials new and old. The Eames often visited with their grandchildren; putting them in their short films and taking them to their exhibits. These playful interactions were also valuable lessons on the design process. Join Llisa Demetrios for a showing of vintage images and short film screenings from the archives while sharing stories about lessons learned from her grandparents, Charles and Ray Eames.  She will also talk about her own studio where she works in bronze and wood, and where they continue to make her mother’s designs.

Simon Dinnerstein’s exhibit, The Lasting World, depicts a personal journey from early, hyper-realist works through more introspective and fantastical later works.  Join the artist, in conversation, as he explores his work.  The centerpiece of the exhibit, The Fulbright Triptych, a visually complex work, part autobiographical essay, part reflection on the historical legacies of the 20th century, and part meditation on the power of images to inspire across time and place, will be one of the works discussed.
