His work has also been exhibited in Berlin, Erfurt, Potsdam and Jena, Germany. He has received awards including Sponsorship by the New York Foundation for the Arts, Israel-Tennessee Visual Artist Exchange Project Fellowship, USIA Arts America Grant. and a New Forms Regional Initiative Grant from the NEA. He works primarily in installations and community public art, and is interested in exploring through his projects the potential of creating a better “sense of place” (leading to a respect for that place and the environment).

Scope and Content

In 1992 Burning Man began to formally feature art installations created for and executed during the event on the Black Rock Desert. The primary works that year were three wicker women by British artist Serena de la Hey, a cartographic grid by Jim McCormick, and a Waterway sculpture by Gregg Schlanger. The Waterway consisted of a cistern from which water was hand pumped by participants into a series of troughs reminiscent of an Escher drawing, a seemingly endless loop of recirculating flow built within a square, trussed open structure. He also built a wooden sculpture that functioned as a shower as a related work. Materials include a grant application, photographs, slides and negatives, correspondence, newsletters, and a small booklet made by Chris de Monterey.
