Stig Brøgger (1941-2021) was a Danish artist working in sculpture, painting, installations and photography. His aim was to show how art contributes to the human experience and understanding of the surrounding world. He lived and worked in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Scope and Content
Stig Brøgger’s took a two-month long trip to the United States in fall 1969. After arriving and spending a couple of weeks in New York, Brøgger flew via Chicago to San Francisco, and traveled by car to Los Angeles, Tijuana and Ensenada in Mexico, Palm Springs, Death Valley, Las Vegas, Pyramid Lake, Reno, Lake Tahoe, and back to L.A. He then flew to Arizona to visit the Grand Canyon, Painted Desert, and Petrified Forest before flying back to New York, and later returning to Copenhagen. Stig's main traveling companion on the trip was Erik Thygesen, a Danish journalist and author. During their travels, Brøgger and Thygesen met with a number of artists and curators including Robert Smithson, Kynaston McShine, Lucy Lippard, Joseph Kosuth, La Monte Young, and Ed Ruscha.
