Two-time Grammy winner violinist Mads Tolling, six-time DownBeat Magazine International Critics Poll winner guitarist Mimi Fox, and internationally acclaimed bassist and vocalist Jeff Denson, have forged their musical talents in a new group, the San Francisco String Trio. “May I Introduce to You” is the trio’s debut album and a loving homage to the classic Beatles record on its 50th anniversary. Much like the Beatles drew on an array of traditions and styles in crafting Sgt. Pepper’s, the cooperative ensemble approaches each song as an opportunity to imbue supremely familiar songs applying a multi-dimensional approach to produce innovative arrangements weaving together sounds of jazz, pop, rock, swing to present a fun and memorable live concert.

Women photographers across geographies and cultures have used the land as an apparatus to formulate ideas about gender, identity, and race as well as a means to critique local and global politics. Van Hoesen will focus on the work of four artists featured in Laid Bare in the Landscape:  Ana Mendieta, Mary Beth Edelson, Otobong Nkanga, and Laura Aguilar. Dr. Brett M. Van Hoesen is Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Nevada, Reno. 

Steep Canyon Rangers aren’t afraid to experiment with the tried-and-true forms of bluegrass and have affirmed their place as one of the most versatile and idiosyncratic bands in all of contemporary American music. The Grammy Award-winning, North Carolina-based sextet has spent nearly two decades bending and shaping the bluegrass aesthetic, wedding it to elements of pop, country, folk rock, and more to create something original and all their own.

Join us for an evening concert in the Nightingale Sky Room, where the Sierra Nevada provide an unforgettable backdrop to an evening of ambitious string-based music and genre-defying bluegrass.

We have liftoff! Celebrate the launch of Orbital Reflector with artists, scientists and space travelers alike. Meet the artist Trevor Paglen, get a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Orbital Reflector, and enjoy live performances from members of the Reno Philharmonic and special guests. Attempt to catch a glimpse of the satellite in orbit with state-of-the-art telescopes on the Stacie Mathewson Sky Plaza, courtesy of the Fleischmann Planetarium.

Nevada Museum of Art in partnership with the Desert Research Institute’s Science Alive program, hosts an annual statewide conference to explore best practices in STEAM Education. 

The NV STEAM Conference is the most important state-wide event for exploring ideas and strategies that incorporate Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math Education into pioneering classroom practices that foster student creativity through engaging, hands-on workshops and nationally recognized keynote speakers.

This year, we are asking ourselves about the next chapter of STEAM thinking. 

How can we better approach interdisciplinary practices that transcend the silos of art and science?

In 2019, the NV STEAM Conference considers the ways in which historical practices, influenced by new technologies, can catalyze innovations in STEAM education. Using today’s most exciting digital tools, we can launch a new chapter of STEAM education based on authentic, interdisciplinary exploration of the world around us.

A few miles south of Carson City, Nevada lies a collection of stone buildings that look like they belong to another time. They represent a complex past that changed the course of generations of American Indians as one of the hundreds of Indian boarding schools built across the United States. They also represent a period in American history when the government thought they could change the thoughts, beliefs, and culture of American Indians across the country. The beautiful stone buildings stand as a testament to the countless stories of hardship, resilience, strength, and the triumphs of native peoples across the Great Basin. They represent the Stewart Indian School, and this is its story.

Join us for the premier screening of the documentary film, produced and directed by JoAnne Peden, with associate director Sam Santoro.  The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring alumni, scholars, and special guests.

Guided Tours are offered Saturdays at 1 pm, Sundays at 1 pm; the last Wednesday of each month at 1:30 pm; and Thursdays at 6 pm (except First Thursdays). Reservations are not needed.
