From the creative mind of Jessi LeMay comes the storytelling and narrative filmmaking project The Folk & the Lore. This multimedia project aims to collect, archive, and tell stories from Reno and throughout the region through photography, short films, and live storytelling events that will be held regularly at the Nevada Museum of Art. Together, we believe that when you know your neighbor’s story, not only do you feel more connected to your community, but those stories become part of your own. Join this event for an evening of storytelling and films based on the Wild Woman.

In celebration for the upcoming centennial and sesquicentennial for Reno Rodeo and the City of Reno (respectively), The Folk & The Lore will be telling the unique stories of western life and how the Rodeo has shaped the unique identity of our city. We will be exploring western traditions, notable characters from Reno’s past and present, and how the ranching community came to be what it is today.

In celebration of Artown the Museum will offer FREE admission to Midtown Art Walk participants, offering the chance to explore City of Dust: The Evolution of Burning Man. Guests are welcome to join artist Jessica Rath from 6 – 8 pm as she premiers her experimental film, Last of the Herd, and discusses artistic processes. Participants will receive half off admission to this program with proof that they are on the Midtown Art Walk. For a full map of the 2017 Midtown Art Walk, please click here.  

Long before Black Lives Matter became a rallying cry, Edythe Boone embodied that truth as an artist, an educator, and a great-grandmother. When a personal tragedy ignites a national outcry, everything that Edythe has worked so tirelessly for is at stake. From humble Harlem beginnings herself, the indefatigable Edythe has for decades introduced underserved youth and seniors to the transformative power of art. Filmed in an observational style over three years, the documentary “A New Color: The Art of Being Edythe Boone” creates an opening to see the world through Edythe’s eyes and her artistic legacy, commemorating the great events of her time.

As part of the 2017 Reno Mural Expo, Art Spot Reno presents this film screening, followed by a panel discussion moderated by the film’s director, Mo Morris. If you ask most people what Western music is you are likely to hear the response, Cowboys and Indians. 3hattrio has great respect for this music but they also think there is more to the West. Music is often identified with place, like the Delta and its blues or mountain music of Appalachia. In the case of the 3hattrio, inspiration comes from the deserts of southern Utah, thus, Desert Music of the Greater West. Join us for an evening of music that is spacious, atmospheric, mirage-like, spiced with old-time cowboy, classical, jazz, and Caribbean overtones.

As the Collaborating Curator for Unsettled, iconic Los Angeles artist Ed Ruscha’s singular perspective and experiences in the ever-changing West have informed and shaped this landmark exhibition.  Join Ruscha, in conversation with Curatorial Director and Curator of Contemporary Art JoAnne Northrup, as they explore the connections among the diverse cultures and artistic practices of the super region we call the Greater West.

Tony “Coyote” Perez has been traveling to the desert to help build and strike Black Rock City since 1996. He helped to found the Department of Public Works in 1998 and has been the City Superintendent ever since. Known as the “Bard of the Desert” he is Burning Man’s first Storytelling Fellow. Join Tony as he weaves the tale of the Golden Spike and other desert rituals.
